We are planning a family vacation/college tour to the San Francisco area in early August 2008. After visiting Stanford we would like to spend a couple of days driving down Rt 1- as far as Big Sur. Can you recommend a place to stay for our family- (4 kids 16-7) along the way- not too far from Stanford? The Ritz, Half Moon Bay or further down towards Monterey and Carmel. Were staying at the Pelican our first night, then heading up to stay at the Benbow and drive Ave of the Giants, and then heading back down to Mar Vista for three nights. Ive heard great things about Boskos and have been meaning to try it, but Ive been in Europe for the last couple of months and will soon be heading to Madagascar. But once Im done with all this globe-trotting, Ill head to Ctoga for a mud bath and dinner at Boskos. I couldnt think of a better way to decompress from an 11,000mi flight.

You forgot to mention Em Les Restaurant in Carmel, CA. They have the best breakfast, and I eat there every time I visit. I think its the best place to eat in Carmel for budget conscious people. I really like your advice on some of the other activities such as 17 mile drive though.

You pose a hard question. It really comes down to what you want to do. If youre most interested in holing up in your room, then Id say go to Occidental. It has a lovely Shangri-La feel to itvery far removed from civilization. Healdsburg is a better choice if you want something more active. You can hit a few wineries, then walk around the Plaza to sample goodies from the local gourmet groceries. As for Sonoma, well, I love Beltane Ranch. Check it out on the Sonoma page of the site. Staying in town is also fun because you can walk around, and of the three destinations, its the closest to the city.

I agree that the walk along the coast from Lovers Point in Pacific Grove is not to be beat. Theres good places to explore the tide pools if you take the path all the way around the peninsula tip to the Asilomar side (or drive). Love the pure white sand at Asilomar beach.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
