9to5mac.com found a nice little pricey prize at Buy.com. They’re selling an unlocked 3G 16GB iPhone with a full Apple Warranty for $799.99. It can be used with any GSM carrier in the world, and since the phone isn’t jailbroken, it can be updated via iTunes.
If you’ve been waiting for an unlocked, blessed-by-Cupertino iPhone here is the link to get one.
9to5mac.com speculates that Apple is clearing inventory to prep for the next generation iPhone.

So, what does this let you do with the iPhone, besides use any cell phone carrier?

This is a seriously large amount of money. I agree that the UI for the iPhone is the best in the industry but it’s hardley worth 3 to 4 times the going rate of other smart phones. When does the exclusivity of the iPhone and AT&T Wireless contract end?

I have a Nokia E90 which I felt was the Cadillac of smartphones which I bought unlocked for $800 from Buy.com.
Just bought an iPod Touch a few weeks ago and have found it to be leaps and bounds better than the E90. So yeah an unlocked iPhone is worth at least $800.
I thought the lack of physical keyboard was a deal breaker but you know what I type faster on the iPod Touch (iPhone).

I won’t pay $800 for a iphone I can run on verizon EVDO Rev A. with 4G around the corner, and LTE on the consumer side looking like it will win out over WIMAX on the commercial telecom side, why drop $800 in to a phone that will get at best 1.2Mbs Down/380Kbs Up (yea, much better than AT&T), but not anywhere near LTE. If there is no LTE iphone, I am sure I will get used to Android which will likely sync with my Netbook running Linux and a Coco like X-manager since apple won’t make a netbook or if they do, for under $1600…
