I’m not going to go into explicit detail in these shownotes. Brief #267 covers a secret that only some of the most devoted Apple lovers know. In the episode, I tell you The Secret, and it’s not the same one you’ll see in the bookstores. This is The Secret you can experience if you go to One Infinite Loop, Cuptertino. If you’re not an Apple disciple, you’ll probably want to skip this episode because you probably won’t get why I’m so over-the-moon. Kool-Aid, anyone?

They have a shirt that says "I've been to the mother ship" I think. Apple should sell some of their company store stuff at their regular stores. We like your black hoodie!!

  2. Roberto Says:

So are you guys shiny Firefly superfans #1 and #2? Love my Mac too and proud of it :-) Robert

  3. Ryan Says:

That mousepad will go great with my round monitor!

  4. Cali Lewis Says:

Yep! We're trying to bring saying "Shiny" into pop culture more than it is. :)

  5. Dave Peterson Says:

I don’t have a Mac (yet), so I don’t think I could pass as a true disciple at the Apple Company Store, but maybe my four iPods and two Apple TVs could get me in under provisional acolyte status? The store sounds cool; for no reason I can really explain, I love stores like that. I’ll have to take a side trip to Cupertino the next time I’m in San Francisco.

  7. northerngeek Says:

AFAIK Microsoft has their own Company Store full of the same stuff, it appeared on a recent Channel 10 show. I am a Microsoft fan though. I don't get what all the fuss about Apple and Macs is about but I have used them, owned them etc and the experience seems crippled to me, how can one be a geek yet not be able to tinker with their PCs insides? So for me personally it's MS->Linux/KDE–>Apple. That said the Geekbreif podcast is one of my favourites, it's just episodes like this seem a little useless for those who think white plastic belongs in the kitchen with blenders etc like it always has done.

  8. Boots Says:

@northerngeek – You can tinker with the innards of OS X way more than you can do on a recent MS platform. Apple does a great job of hiding all of the bits from the average user. Drop to terminal.app and have at it – your experience will be nearly identical to what you can poke around with in a *nix console. I've been to MSFT company stores in Redmond and Mountain View and it's a completely different experience than the Apple company store. Just about the only good thing about the MSFT company stores was extremely cheap software if you have a MSFT-sponsored voucher.

  9. das7282 Says:

Another episode where after watching the first two minutes I realized it was nothing but a glorified Apple commercial… Apple better be paying you to do episodes like this. As for your unwavering devotion to Apple, while to you it may seem like a good thing but to everyone else (everyone being the normal people of the world who don't need to worship a company), most would find it troubling. Hello?! Apple is a company! A company that only wants to make MONEY form you suckers. Do you actually think Apple cares about you? No, they only make you think they care about you so you will keep buying what they want to sell you! It's not like Apple is out there trying to solve world hunger, end global warming or promote world peace! Name one thing Apple has done to deserve this cult following they have aside from great marketing. And don't give me "their products are better" crap because I know they aren't. They make a couple "pretty" products (with virtually not variety) and build in their closed system so you always have to come back to them for upgrades and replacements…. And they sued Microsoft for bundling?! If you guys don't see a company that runs its business like that as evil, you're blind! Like I said, Apple better be paying you lots of money for these 5 – 6 minute long commercials!

  10. Peter MacLeod Says:

Please try to be nice. Cali is doing an amazing job and just can't help but Love Apple and I don't blame her I do to. She always says what her episodes are about so if you don't like Apple please just don't watch it. Its not nice to come here and slander people because you don't like something. Cali I think your doing an amazing job and please keep it up, I just love every episode and just can't wait for each one to come out. I would love to goto that Company Store but I live in Canada so it may be a while. For now I will just have to settle for our friendly neighborhood Genius Bar. P.S.: Cali, What do you think of the new Airport Extreme with Gigabit? I read so many bad things about it on the net so i wasn't sure about buying it but finally went and got it last week. I absolutely love it and can't seem to see why so many people hate it.

  11. Jude Ng Says:

I make a living using Macs so i am totally biased when i say that Apple is way better than PCs. I was a Windows user for God knows how long…but the constant crashes and viruses finally made me decide it ain't worth the trouble. Vista didn't help either…it made it worse. Leopard runs really good on older Macs unlike Vista which requires that you buy the latest and fastest processor. Mac users are just so greatful for not having to deal with stuff PC users live with every day. Give Cali a break…if i got a chance to go to the Mother ship i would probably react the same way.

  12. northerngeek Says:

I don't mean this as a flame, or to spur major debate, it's just more of a curiosity- what was the last version of Windows you had running as your main OS? I like products like Media Center, my Tablet, my UMPC and my Xbox so for me I use MS's products all the time but I have never had a virus- I haven't had my computer crash since the day I installed XP SP1. I am not saying your reason is invalid, I can totally understand that people differ in the way they use computers but I would say using crashes and viruses as a reason is now invalid- hopefully MS can spur better interest with Win7 if they use MinWin, and I want to ask- would you ever consider switching? I think the only real reason to call somebody a fanboy is that they won't consider switching, personally I consider it ever time Apple makes an announcement however I decide each time that I prefer where I am now (I don't like Jobs that much either). Do you give real consideration each time a new release is made or are you going to be "Mac for life"?

  13. das7282 Says:

Hey, like the other guy, I'm not trying to flame you and this may seem a little harsh, but why don't you know what you're talking about before you make negative comments about Microsoft products. 1). Vista does not need the latest hardware to run. I've installed Vista on plenty of older, slower PC's and it runs just fine. However, it is "recommended" that you have at least 1GB of RAM (but that's also a recommendation for Tiger and Leopard) and you need a DX9 video card if you want Aero work. An adequate DX9 video card can be picked up for as little as $29. Now I have a 1st gen Mac Mini that as built in ATi graphics that "can not" be upgraded and can not display all the cool visual effects that Tiger and Leopard have. So don't go there with the (getting) old upgrade argument. At least I don't have to use a puddy knife to open my PC when I want to upgrade it. 2) 99% of the viruses out there can be stopped just by people being responsible with their computers. I personally and professionally haven't seen a virus infected PC in years simply because I've educated everyone I know on how to stay safe. If you were getting viruses all the time like you say (which I suspect is a grouse exaggeration) then I'm glad you switched to Mac because that means you were one of the irresponsible users who helped perpetrate all the viruses out there. 3) It has been my experience that Macs crash just as often as Windows computers do (not very often). Yes, back in the Windows 98 days, Windows did crash constantly. But do we really want to talk about OS8's or OS9's stability? Mac's didn't get stable until OSX just like PC's didn't get stable until Windows 2000 (for the professionals) and Windows XP (for consumers). 4) There is nothing wrong with Vista. I've been using it on several PC's at work and my PC at home and I have had zero problems with it. All my hardware work perfectly fine with it and everyone at work who are using it are perfectly happy with it. Yes, I will agree with a couple issue people have with it, like… It isn't really that compelling of an upgrade. All it really is, is Windows XP with a pretty UI and a couple little changes here and there. UAC is a very welcome addition but other than those couple things, what makes it so much better than Windows XP? And the other issue I have is all the different versions. Come on Microsoft, sell just one version. Other than those couple issues, Windows Vista works fine and I think it's getting a bum rap.

  14. Andne Says:

Honestly, Vista works pretty well on older PC's/lower spec PC's too. I have a 3.5-year old laptop that I run Vista on, and I think most of my latency is caused by the hdd. (It's a 1.6GHz pentium-m with 1GB RAM – definitely slow now). It also works fine on my computer with sempron processor and on-board graphics. I won't argue that Macs don't have some of the same problems as PC's, but in some industries, a Mac isn't even an option (I write code for the controllers on construction equipment – all of my tools are windows specific, except for the few perl scripts we use). Macs do have their uses though, but unfortunately they aren't in my field. I actually do like some of the software that it uses (I used Mail on a Mac I had access to for a while once, liked some of the interface aspects there), but well… Here's the real kicker though, the worst thing that could happen to Apple is that the Mac becomes popular. You guys (or gals) are so happy that you don't have to deal with viruses, but it's only because Macs are such a small part of the market that no-one wants to bother targeting them for viruses. Honestly, if you had the option of infecting 500 computers or 500,000 computers (I forget the relative population sizes), which would you chose? Granted, it doesn't help that probably a quarter of those 500,000 are extremely vulnerable. I knew there was a reason my college required people to have antivirus software on their computer in order to have access to the network (we gave it to them for free too). And honestly Cali, I know you use Macs, but is it too much to ask for a site that doesn't require me to go find Firefox just to post on it? :-P

  15. jude ng Says:

Hey, I guess as long as there are computers, there'll always be arguments and counter-arguments on which OS is better. It actually encourages innovation on both sides. Anyway, its almost Christmas so peace to everyone…Macs and PC users alike..oppss..almost forgot Linux ;-)

  16. Dave Says:

Hi — I generally love the show (am one of your new Tivo viewers) but I have to say that this episode fell a little flat. Compared to other ones, this was just an Apple and Sony commercial. I sat there waiting for some serious content but instead, I was just told that "Apple has a company store." Hope I'm not saying anything new here.

  17. Jeremy Says:

You are exaggerating quite a bit here in many areas, but I won't bother to correct them all. The one that rally sticks out as plain old "wrong" is your assertion that you can't see all the "cool visual effects" of Tiger on a MacMini. This is just untrue. An older Mac computer when upgraded to *Leopard* will not get some of the transparency effects, but Tiger is Tiger and it was designed to run on the MacMini which it does flawlessly and without any loss of "cool graphics."

  18. S. Felix Says:

I was planning to stop by Cupertino before going to the Macworld conference. Now I'm even more motivated after watching your breif. I don't know why this window users trying to hate on apple and backing MS. If they don't like watching you on itunes or don't like looking at your beautiful cinemas in the background oh well, tell them to suck it up. Cry babies….

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

  26. North Face Gloves Says:

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

  29. Cheap North Face Jackets Says:

The brand new Zune browser is surpr isingly superior, but not as good as the iPod is. It operates properly, but is notas quickly as Safari, and features a clunkier interface. If you sometimes plan on utilizing the internet browser that isn’t an problem, but when you??? re planning to browse the internet alot out of your PMP then the iPod is larger screen and improved browser might be significant.

  30. Moncler Kids Says:

Sorry for the large evaluation, but I’m really loving the new Zune, and hope th is, as very well since the fantastic assessments some other men and women have written, will enable you decide if it’s the suitable option for you personally.

Sorry for the huge review, but I’m really loving the new Zune, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it’s the right choice for you.

  59. Christian Louboutin Says:

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

  60. Christian Louboutin Sandals Says:

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  61. Cheap Christian Louboutin Says:

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

  62. Cheap rosetta stone Says:

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

Almost all of the things you state is astonishingly accurate and it makes me wonder the reason why I had not looked at this in this light previously. Your piece truly did switch the light on for me as far as this specific topic goes. Nonetheless at this time there is actually one point I am not really too comfy with so while I attempt to reconcile that with the actual main idea of your issue, permit me see exactly what all the rest of the visitors have to say.Very well done.

  65. Meaghan Gord Says:

I was wondering if you ever thought of changing the layout of your site? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having 1 or two pictures. Maybe you could space it out better?

  66. cheap links of london Says:

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
