There’s a poster that illustrates 56 different species of geeks. It’s not exhaustive, but it IS really cool. If you check it out, you’re likely to find yourself fitting into more than one geek category. One of the categories is food geek. I argue there’s a sub-category for all of us Grilled Cheese Sandwich Geeks. This episode was inspired by Veronica Belmont’s Maholo Daily Grilled Cheese Sandwich episode. Veronica and Grilled Cheese geeks everywhere need to know all about the amazingness that happens when you replace butter with Trader Joe’smayo. ‘Nough said.

That looked like a very tasty sandwich. Man you are way more exotic than I am with the cheese. I go straight to Boars Head White American. I just love how that tastes. I will have to branch out with my grill cheese in the future.

Grilled cheese geeks??? I knew you were Good People, now it’s indisputable! My personal favorite is sharp cheddar with ham, toasted on a large croissant. (Is that stretching the definition?)
December 7th, 2007 at 7:08 pm
Not at all! :)
December 7th, 2007 at 7:32 pm
Well that's interesting.. I'm hungry again now.. and all I've eaten is bread all day!!
December 7th, 2007 at 7:49 pm
Well for those of us that are not allergic to eggs that sounds good, but since I'm one of those that is allergic to eggs, I'm sticking with butter.
December 7th, 2007 at 8:13 pm
Interesting change of pace for this episode! I liked it, good show Cali and Neal! BTW, is that the coffee maker in the background you got to keep? That thing's a monster!
December 8th, 2007 at 6:28 am
is that tequila in the back ground? mayo also works good if you are making oven fried chicken you just rub the chicken pieces with mayo than roll in ground up corn flakes put on rack on cookie sheet and bake till done yummy
December 8th, 2007 at 8:20 am
So where is the grill, I'd call that a fried cheese sandwich and when did Cheddar become red! No wonder you're all FAT %*&~'s
December 8th, 2007 at 12:01 pm
You consider Cali fat??
December 8th, 2007 at 1:41 pm
Maybe he means Americans? I hear stuff like that all the time from some other countries.
December 8th, 2007 at 4:13 pm
Nice bread choice! I like the Flax and work for the company ;) Do I smell a sponsorship deal??
December 8th, 2007 at 4:19 pm
Haha! After we shot the show, I saw that Veronica used the same brand of bread, just a different kind. Thought that was funny. :)
December 8th, 2007 at 5:20 pm
If I recall correctly in Maholo Daily they suggest using white bread instead of whole grain bread: It absorbs the ingredients better, which is my personal experience and preference too. Though I have yet to try a flax bread.
December 8th, 2007 at 6:47 pm
Very tasty episode. Have your tried Tuna, Egg and Cheese? You take one side of a hamburger bun and put on Tuna Salad, then a put a layer of Egg Salad on top of the Tuna, then put a slice of Cheddar cheese on top of the whole thing. Toast in Oven for 5 minutes. It may sound weird but the combination is amazing. Love watching you guys!
December 8th, 2007 at 9:07 pm
Did you shoot this clip a while ago, or were you really using bread with a 'best by' date of two weeks ago?! Also, can I buy the Tshirt you were wearing? This has "Christmas gift for my wife" written all over it (I'm the nerd, though, not her)!
December 8th, 2007 at 9:12 pm
No way, two weeks ago? Man, that flax seed holds up well! :) That shirt was about to go on eBay, but if you want to buy it, just shoot me an email and we can work it out.
December 9th, 2007 at 4:17 am
yep amerikans.
December 9th, 2007 at 4:19 am
Great Sandwich! Also, Americans, as a statistic, are overweight, but you Cali, just perfect.
December 9th, 2007 at 4:50 am
I make mine a bit different. I put butter on the outside and mayo inside with the cheese. I will have to try the mayo on the outside.
December 9th, 2007 at 7:12 am
Hey, where's the promised Amazon list of GREAT BUYS!
December 9th, 2007 at 7:13 am
oops… wrong post…… Sorry….
December 9th, 2007 at 8:00 am
Cali…are you sure you have to use Trader's Joe or Mexican? After all….the key to a good grill cheese sandwich is in the ingredients.
December 9th, 2007 at 8:19 am
… in the previous show, #0270.
December 9th, 2007 at 3:00 pm
We tried it with regular white bread and cheap mayo and 2 slices of cheese. YUMMY!!! More easy cooking episodes, Cali! You need to invent one of those bacon things that press an Apple logo on the bread!
December 9th, 2007 at 4:25 pm
[proh-vuh-loh-nee] good none the less‽
December 9th, 2007 at 10:11 pm
After watching the GC GB I had to give it a try. I went to Trader Joe's for the mayo, and with the exception of the bread (I used white) I prepared it your way. I thought it was ok, but I prefer using butter rather then mayo. I have to give you credit for reminding me how good a simple GC sandwich tastes.
December 9th, 2007 at 11:06 pm
I've used butter and mayo (Hellmann's) before for grilled cheese, but my favorite is Miracle Whip. Adds a little extra flavor to the sandwich.
December 9th, 2007 at 11:47 pm
OBTW I used sharp cheddar only/
December 10th, 2007 at 12:58 am
"Provolone" is Italian. You can be sure the way you pronounce it is wrong either.
December 10th, 2007 at 1:17 am
Cali suggested "Mexican majo" as a Trader Joe's replacement. What's that? I can't find it anywhere. Also I didn't get what she said about it's ingredients, something like "because it has ——- and juice in it" Could someone enlighten me? I'm eager to try this geeky recipe.
December 10th, 2007 at 7:51 am
Hey Cali. Where do you get the Trader Joe's Mayo online? It states specifically on their website they do not sell online. And like you, I have no local store. p.s. – the OpenID to leave a comment did not work for me twice.
December 10th, 2007 at 8:56 am
Try a little oregano on top. If you want to go fancy…. tomatoes. As for cheese, I like American, Jack, and smoked Havarti.
December 10th, 2007 at 9:16 am
Check out your local carnicera or frutera, many of them will have a small grocery attached where you will likely find all kinds of mexican treats.
December 10th, 2007 at 9:21 am
oh my god ! how can you eat these things ? please do not broadcast this, geeks need better recipes because most of them already eat junk food
December 10th, 2007 at 10:10 am
I'm going to Trader Joe's today to get that Mayo! Gonna try it with Muenster Cheese and Wheat Bread.
December 10th, 2007 at 10:41 am
Actually, I have friends ship the mayo to me.I didn't mean to imply you can order it online. Sorry!!!
December 10th, 2007 at 1:05 pm
Ever watched a short-order chef put one together? They lay both slices of bread on the cooking surface, with cheese on both. Sometimes they'll cover it with a pie tin to trap the heat, then at the proper moment, stick the cheezy sides together and Delish!
December 10th, 2007 at 1:06 pm
but you know Cali is P.H.A.T. pronounced as fat but we all know what it stands for right?
December 10th, 2007 at 1:43 pm
Why give up the butter? I always make mine with butter on the outside with cheese and mayo on the inside.
December 10th, 2007 at 3:55 pm
I forgot how much it sucks to live in the middle part of the country… No TJ's you're deprived.
December 11th, 2007 at 12:21 am
great episode – had to run out for a grill cheese within hours after seeing it! and i'm of jewish heritage, we rarely, if ever, do mayo (it's a cultah thang, baby), but you have me thinking i'll give it a try this once. if your trader joe's shipping connection ever dries up, let me know. we got 3 in the portland area, and one more south five miles in tigard. and to the guy using this as an excuse to call americans fat – stop hating. this is the shiny, happy gadget & tech news site. no hating – on americans or anybody. no hating. ever. 'nuff sed.
December 18th, 2007 at 9:20 am
Cali, not to burst your bubble, but, my long gone Grandmother used to make us grilled cheese with mayo rather than butter when I was a little kid! I'm 51 now! Its still tasty, though. I like my grilled cheese with Boar's Head Red Wax Cheddar. A juicy tomato slice adds to the goodness, too!

Generally I do not post on blogs, but I would like to say that this post really forced me to do so! really nice post.
