Before Cali headed off to the vet this morning to find out what is wrong with our Chihuahua’s back leg, we shot Brief 320 about something new from Microsoft Research called the WorldWide Telescope. When it’s released this Spring it will give us the ability to virtual explore the Universe just like Google Earth lets us explore our planet. Imagery is displayed in the same context as you would experience it if you could fly from place to place in a space ship. Robert Scoble saw it in action a few weeks ago and he says it made him cry.
The WorldWide Telescope is dedicated to Microsoft researcher, Jim Gray, and it was introduced at this year’s TED conference by Roy Gould. We show a few clips on Brief 320. You can download the presentation in it’s entirety from TED.com.
BTW, I shot this episode at 24 fps rather than 60. Does anyone notice a difference?
UPDATE: Our Chihuahua’s knee is out of it’s socket. It’s an $800 surgery.

@Martin: there’s another called Stellarium (http://www.stellarium.org/). I’m not really sure why Microsoft think they’ve got something amazingly new here; maybe there’s some novel aspect of their app that didn’t come across properly in that presentation. But hey, if it gets more people interested in astronomy that can only be good; too many people haven’t paid much attention to the night sky and don’t know what they’re missing out on

Thanks for the news about this, Cali! Google Earth already has a something like this built in with the current free version of the program, called Sky, which is pretty amazing. I watched the entire TED presentation, hoping to see something new, but couldn’t pick up on how Microsoft’s WWTelescope is much different than Google’s existing Google Sky. Hopefully it’s even better, but so far it doesn’t seem much different.
Hope both Sydney and Zoe recover quickly!

Starry Night (space.com, starrynight.com) has been around for years, and has features that just are amazing–you can even hook up a computer-controlled telescope (from a few different manufacturers) and really see what you are looking at on your computer screen. I know many professional astronomers use the “Pro” version of it. I don’t see anything in Microsoft’s presentation that offers “more” than either Starry Night or any of the other offerings mentioned in the comments above… (I’ll refrain from any MS bashing…)

I agree, so far I don’t see anything that really exceeds what I’ve got on my laptop with Starry Night Pro, which is just incredible. The first time I saw it (Starry Night), I was amazed beyond words. To be able to look at a very high resolution sky map, with accurate movement, and then see a faint point of light tracking through a constellation, know it’s a satellite, and be able to instantly find out which one and see its orbital track… It duplicates the experience of standing outside and looking up better than I would have believed. Very valuable when living in often-overcast Seattle.

well since no one else has said anything, just wanted to point out that I noticed the 24 fps change immediately when the breif started, however I completely forgot after about 30 seconds once I adjusted to it. What prompted the change?

I noticed that the motion isn’t nearly as smooth in either episode 320 or 321. The 60 fps being compressed to 24 would be much better… please don’t shoot another episode like this!!

24 fps, yes there is a big difference, the motion is not nearly as smooth. Fast expression changes appear instantaneous and have no impression of transition. I think you changed the lighting setup too?
