Nokia N95 | Nokia N800/N810

There are two types of people in the world, people who use Twitter and people who don’t get why anyone would ever want to use Twitter. It’s hard for Twitter devotees to convince the non-techie types in our lives how wonderful Twitter can be. Lee and Sachi LeFever specialize in solving explanation problems with delightful animated movies. On today’s Brief we have permission to show you their video, Twitter in Plain English, and then I talk a bit with Lee about what they do at Common Craft. Also fellow dog lover, Jason Calacanis is having fun with the number of Twitter followers he has. I have a lot of catching up to do, so follow me, please!

cool brief… i liked the way you edited it so that the outside blueish area dimmed in and out when the main video was playing. very cool

  2. Steve K Says:

by the way, i just went twitter crazy. setup it with gtalk and facebook. thanks cali… just ANOTHER program i had to install ;-)

  3. Brian Says:

Cali why does it always say “Upload in progress” for Nokia N95 and Nokia N800/N810?

I have been thinking of getting one so I started to notice this and was curious.

    thx,
    -Brian

  4. Cali Says:

Because when we upload the medium feed, the Nokia feeds get transcoded on the backend, automatically. Sometimes it takes up to 24 hours before they’re completed.

  5. Linh Says:

That’s a pretty neat video explanation. I would add one more category, people who get twitter, but don’t give a crap (raises hand… haha).

I see the attraction, but the everyday things I do… are fairly mundane. Not to mention the bit of stalkerish feel it has, haha.

  6. Henry Says:

Would never use Twitter without Twitterific. Makes the whole thing accessible for us Mac users. What’s the deal with Pownce?

  7. Roberto Says:

I get it now! Great explanation. I’m going to try it out! :-)

  8. Dave Peterson Says:

That really was an excellent explanation of Twitter. I use it every day and as I watched the video I was nodding because they absolutely nailed the reason I find it so worthwhile. And thanks for introducing me to Common Craft, as well.

    Cali
Your screen savers are lame. Look into electric sheep. Works on a mac

Loved Sydney’s little dance at the end!

Are the geekbriefs all still edited by Neal or is Cali doing some of it as well? (or has Cali been helping all along?)

  11. Lloyd Says:

Cali: do I need a phone account to use the N810? I love my iPhone and do not want to change, but if I can use all the features of the N810 without having to get new phone service, I want to buy it.

  12. Mace Moneta Says:

OK, this video convinced me to give Twitter a try.

For Linux users, Twitux is a great Twitter client that integrates with the Gnome desktop. It’s in the Fedora repositories for those using that distribution, so you can just install with the “Add/Remove Software” menu item.

  13. Andrew Says:

Hi Cali have you ever used feedburner for your podcast stats?
If not how do you keep stats related to view numbers on you many feeds?
I ask because I am thinking about using it to help launch my new podcast about using the GIMP software.
    Thanks!

  14. Cali Says:

I use PodShow (www.podshow.com). They provide stats. You can also sign up with them and they’ll host your files for free.

  15. MrHappy Says:

Great video! It really was. And it re-affirmed that I ‘get’ Twitter, but am just too busy for Twitter. And, honestly, I don’t really need to so much information about my friends and family. I mean, do they really care that I go to Starbucks every morning, am in 4 – 6 meetings a day, and can barely keep up with my e-mail??? I think not! :-)

  16. Cali Says:

I’d argue that they do care about that! I know a lot of my viewers better than I know my sisters. Sure, I know that my sister loves Americanas from Starbucks, but I don’t know when her boss has just walked out the door, leaving everything up to her. That’s important stuff, because it makes a person who they are. If I were your sister, at the very least, I’d make it a point to think about you throughout that difficult day and I’d make it a point to call you that evening when I knew you were off work.

We often don’t our own families when something happens in our lives because there are too many people to call and tell…you know what I mean? I have three sisters and a mom. It’s so much easier at the end of a hard day to Twitter than call four people and explain. Everyone on Twitter knew about my dog Sydney’s surgery before my family knew about it. It’s not a lazy thing…it’s a conversation starter.

  17. Simon Says:

Thanks for sharing the Common Craft video. Their work is exceptional.

  18. Tony Says:

I don’t know, Cali – I tried to twitter. I got up on my perch and gave it a go. Managed to get in, but it kept telling me that my email was invalid for the friends lookup step. It’s kinda lonely twittering on your own.

    *sigh*

  19. Shawn Says:

Don’t look Cali, but you’re being followed! @BlueHeronTrail and @MsBlueHeron are now stalking you on twitter.com, thanks to your recent ‘cast. Also following @NealCampbell and @MarkTayl0r, per your recommendation. Met @fologrldg yesterday, too, and she showed me the cutest shot she’d taken of you. (Blushing yet?) ;) I’m also following your friend, Tim Ferriss (@tferriss), whom I find it ironic to find on twitter after reading his book!

Thanks for another great show, Cali. I’m a twitter addict now. Follow me, if you like: http://twitter.com/blueherontrail

  20. Rick Says:

The HD podcasts on iTunes are still stuck on #324. HD viewers are people, too.

  21. Cali Says:

Really? Hmmm…the shows are uploaded to the HD feed. Try refreshing your iTunes subscription and let me know. Anyone else having this issue?

  22. Brian Says:

My daughter and I watch Geek Brief on TiVo and are big fans here in Richardson. Just wanted to let you know that we had a bit of deja vu tonight. The TiVo version labeled Episode #324 was the correct episode. The episode labeled Episode #325 was actually #324 again. And the episode labeled #326 is actually episode #325. Confused yet? I know I am! ;-) Sydney looks like she needs to sign up for The Biggest Loser or Dancing With The Stars. Gawd I watch too much tv.

  23. Cali Says:

Uh-oh. Checking on it. Thanks for the heads up!

  24. Chris Says:

Excellent brief. I feel like I finally get it and I’ve been struggling to wrap my brain around it for awhile. It’s always fun when a light bulb goes off. Common Craft does nice work.

  25. Lee LeFever Says:

Cali and Neal, it was great to meet you at SXSW – it worked so perfectly to share the video and meet you at the same time. I hope your dog is recovering well! The episode turned out great! Cheers!

  26. Daynah Says:

Oh, I loved this episode! :D

  27. Andrew Says:

Thanks for the info Cali, I’ll look into podcasting via podshow

  28. Nikobert Says:

Great episode! You just made me get a twitter account. But its kinda sad that none of my friends has one yet :( hope it’s gonna become popular in Germany eventually…

    Love your podcast
I’m your biggest German fan! :)

    Nick
