I almost cancelled going down to SXSW all together because I wanted to be with Sydney (our Chihuahua). We decided to drive down and back Saturday, and the footage we captured is a series of happy accidents. It started with me running into podcasting pioneer (and Big Trip supporter) C.C. Chapman. He is one of my mentors and has given me some great advice over the last couple of years. Then I ran into Ron Bloom, CEO of PodShow, and his lovely wife, Marta. I asked him if there is anything new coming up with PodShow, and I think I ended up with a bit of a scoop. I also talked briefly to Marta about her new celebrity gossip blog, The Diva Report.
After chatting with Ron and Marta, we met someone new. Kelly Sutton is a college student, blogger and podcaster. His Web site, hackcollege.com is a life hacking site for college students. It’s all about doing more with less.
Finally, and by that I mean FINALLY, I got Justine Ezarik on camera. We see each other at different events about once a month, but usually, I’m going up one side of an escalater while she’s going down the other, so we end up just waving at each other. She was there doing some work with the Viddler guys who created a site for SXSW videos called SXSWvideos.com.

Thanks Cali for the terrific video interview that is now published on http://austincast.com/blog/ . . . I was real, real lucky to catch the blur that was you rushing by. Also got interviews with Veronica Belmont (mahalo daily), Leah Culver (technologist with pownce), Casey Mckinnon (Galacticast), Heather Armstrong (dooce), Zadi Diaz (epic-fu), Lindsay Campbell (wallstrip and now moblogic.tv), and about 100 interviews all told… some were simply phenomenal because of the vivid personalities.
I also spent about 6 hours with Robert Scoble, at his panel, wandereing around the Convention Center, riding on his rented tour bus, eating bbq at the Salt Lick, and partying. This will break up in to at least a dozen clips.
I love your idea of getting a tour bus and doing the 50 states in 50 weeks. I think I found the perfect tourbus for you on austin.craigslist.

You could run it on vegetable oil and I can just picture you broadcasting from the top deck with the road stretched out in front of you. Recruit and driver and you can Neil could broadcast in front of an unfolding panomarama.
I wasn’t kidding! This is the perfect bus for you and you could probably talk them down from $10 grand. And it’s diesel so it would run on free fuel after you converted it.

That’s cool! The problem with running on vegetable oil is that it’s a huge investment to convert an engine to run it properly. You can do it without conversion, but it won’t start up in cold weather. We sure can’t have that!!! :) We have a diesel car and used biodiesel for a while, but they only gas station that had it around us stopped selling it. It’s unfortunately not as easy to find and commit to as evangelists would have us believe. That’ll change, but not in time for The Big Trip.
Thanks for the links to the interviews!

Cali,
Of all the SXSW video reports I’ve seen I think yours captures the experience best. At SXSW I was going up an escalator when you were hustling down one next to me. I wanted to say ‘hi’ but you were in a hurry, so maybe next time.
Good episode. Come to Nashville in that RV!

Awww! You should have said hi, I would have stopped! My problem is that I always look in a hurry I think. I’m rarely actually in that much of a hurry. :)

Of all the SXSW coverage, your’s is the only one that made me want to go next year. I have never been to anything like that before, but maybe I will get my lazy self motivated to go. I envy you guys with The Big Trip. I would love to do something like that. Hope you come through Charlotte, NC!

I think Ron Bloom’s statements require further clarification, and I am looking forward to a good discussion here. I understand what he is aiming for, and I think it is an inevitable direction to go to (in the positive sense of the word inevitable), but what does it mean for the loyal core fan base of PodShow podcasts?
And how about audio vs video? Some of the random chit chat audio shows are actually very popular?

OK veggie oil aside, what do you think about the actual bus … is this what you had in mind Cali?
March 12th, 2008 at 11:56 pm
I hate to digress from the frybrid bus conversations but…
Thank you again for the interview Cali. It’s always great to meet fellow podcasters. Stay in touch and I’m sure we’ll see each other again in the future!
