Neal and I spoke at WordCamp Dallas on Saturday. Matt Mullenweg, the very young founder of WordPress was there so we chatted a bit about the origin of WordPress and features on the new 2.5 release. WordPress.com is a free, hosted blog network. WordPress.org is where you can download the open source application to install on your own Web server. Matt’s personal blog is http://ma.tt.

Cali – Wow! Thanks for putting the “Newton Signing” on GeekBrief. I’m honored! I’ve dubbed this episode “The Antique and the Old Man”
PS – What’s up with me talking out of the side of my mouth? Jeez – what a dolt!

Cali & Neal,
I stopped by word camp to see you guys, but the plagiarism police went way long. I was volunteering at a fund raiser in Frisco to create a dog park for the city of Frisco (Friscodogpark.org). By the way thank you for the promo code GB1, were I re-registered the site for our organization. But you went on at three, and I could only be gone from 2-3 pm. Is there any way to get a podcast episode of the audio or video? I talked to the AV guy in the control room and he said that everything was being recorded. If not, do you know were I could get it downloaded? I have just posted my first podcast to Itunes using podpress and have been following you guys since the audio podcasts.

WP 2.5 is simply *awful* to use.
The interface is so pale that it hurts the eyes. The dark colours of the previous versions at least helped distinguish different sections of the page and the two-level tabbed menu navigation just *worked*.
Now it’s all over the place and requires several more clicks to get anything done. The lack of a “save and continue” button means that I have to wait until WP decides to save a draft before I can preview my latest changes, and it’s generally difficult to use and buggy.
I’d advise anyone thinking of upgrading to hold off.

Just a side note, but I really liked the look of the outdoor scenes for the WordCamp episodes. Maybe it was the overcast giving good even lighting, but I thought the shots had a very nice appearance.

Wow, someone still carrying around a Newton! I have one in the closet from back when I worked on NewtonMail but have not carried it in over twelve years.

Wow! You got to meet Photo Matt! :D
I upgraded one of my blogs to WP 2.5 and I absolutely love it. I still need to play with it more, but it’s been working great so far.

Chris – I don’t really carry around all that much. This was one of those “special” occasions where I decided it would be cool to have Cali (and Matt) sign it. With that said, I’m still impressed with how well the handwriting recognition works on the MessagePad 2000/2100.
I traveled quite a bit in the late 90’s and I used the MP2000 a lot. It’s enormous compared to some of today’s handheld devices and not nearly as practical to carry around. But – then again – in the early ’90’s I actually hauled around a Color Classic in one of those giant carry bags. What a dork.

Hi Cali & Neal,
GeekBrief on TiVo seems to be lagging behind big time. The “current” episode on TiVo shows to be #0314. In “download past programs” the highest is #0313. I just deleted and obtained another season pass for GeekBrief for the second time. After getting a new season pass, episode #0329 immediately downloads and that’s all. I believe I’ve seen all episodes through #0329 on TiVo even though the “current” seems to be stuck on #0314. The season pass is set up to keep 10 episodes and episode #0329 is the only one in “Now Playing”. From what I understand, GeekBrief on TiVo is supplied through podshow. I also watch DL.TV and CrankyGeeks on TiVo. Their episodes download on TiVo like clockwork using season passes. I don’t see any mention of podshow on their episodes though. Perhaps y’all need to goose podshow to get their act straightened out. ;-) I have plenty of free space on the TiVo. I hope this all makes sense. The best of luck to you both on the “BigTrip”.

I think really that using a proxy is one of the better ways to unblock myspace. I mean it hides your ip and keeps you safe from admins so I would go with it. Unblock Myspace
