I keep getting questions from people asking about the show notes and where they can be found on the Web site. These are the show notes for Brief 345. There are two big stories today, at least in my world. The first is the news out of NAB from Red. They announced two new cameras and an optical drive. The Red Epic is a whopping 5K camera. I have a snazzy demo on the show about that. The Scarlet is one I might actually own one day. It’s 3K and might make sense for those of us who aren’t making movies.

The Red Ray is an optical drive that blows the Blu-ray out of the water.

Psytar is a company willing to fight Apple over the right to build a machine that runs OSX. When we started this story, they were calling it the Open Mac. Now they are calling it the Open Computer. We’ll have to see if they can stand up to Apple legal.

Good nite Cali! Sleep well. Can’t wait to watch the show tomorrow. ^_^

  2. Retna Says:

Wow, didn’t some other companies make MAC clones many years ago?

  3. Retna Says:

    Yeah here it is.

Check it out. Apple actually allowed a license for a specified period. But as Cali says, will there be a big fight about it. I’d say yes.

Oh my, I think you may have hit a record for specs:seconds ratio with this one. Excellent demonstration of different video resolutions, also. It really made the comparisons clear. This was an outstanding Brief.

…and, on the subject of pre-rolls, if you are able to do unique ones, featuring yourself, I think they could be an entertainment asset. I fondly remember the extravanganzas you used to do for Go Daddy, like “The Thick Man”. My all time favorite GBTV ad as entertainment moment is the surfing bit with the “Go, go, go to Go Daddy” Geoff Smith song. That one shines in my memory as a great GeekBrief classic.

I agree with you cali, I hope Psytar survives Apples rath. I’ve always thought there should be a OEM that lets the consumer select wich OS they want to use. But I know Steve Jobs isn’t going to allow this to happen. Apple has to have control over everything.

  7. Will Says:

Great comparison of the video resolutions. Just wonder what the heck you show 5K on.

Apple will likely snuff out this upstart company. Apple is, first and foremost, a hardware company. It’s their revenue lifeblood. They won’t stand for someone bleeding hardware sales.

As for the pre-rolls, I hope they aren’t too long, and if they include you, that’s a bonus. Good for the advertiser if they do include you. That way they have their product associated with your supreme hotness! :-)

  8. N95 Says:

wow, awesome performance with all the tech specs! you’re the tech specs queen! :D

  9. Buikhu Says:

I think it’s super rad that you don’t let advertisers control your show they way they control TV.

There are some things money can’t buy – for everything else there’s… Wait! They’re not sponsoring so I’m just going to shut up.

@ everyone .Why can’t I run OS X on my PC ??? Or can I ? What do I need to do?

  11. Jeff McCord Says:

I am SO happy that you used the word MOXIE in this episode!! James and I literally watched this THREE times!!! I love, love, love it!!! I know it’s not re: me, but it still made me feel a bit special, considering my whole website revolves around MOXIE.

You and Neal are the DEFINITION of Moxie!!! You moxie mox’s!!!

I don’t think the Scarlet has XLR inputs. At least I didn’t see it on the spec sheet.
The Epic does have 2-XLR perhaps you read their PDF that had all three new products in one file and confused the specs for the 5k model with the 3k hand-held model. No problem, we won’t see it for a year anyway.

On pre-roll “we’d all be doing TV”. Isn’t that what the 50 States in 50 weeks is hoped to become, TV for the Travel Channel?

At the end of the day, you can’t do too many things for free, and when you business wants to give you money, you need to capitalize on it or become a charity. And believe me, doing things for free only works if you’re already rich.

    Nice show Cali.

I kinda hope Apple does shut down that company because having Apple control both the hardware and software is what has made Apple computers what they are. What I mean is, if they went the Microsoft way and let everyone use any hardware they wanted OSX would have the same problems as Windows with drivers etc. Apple has done an amazing job keeping their hardware top notch and the software very finely tuned to each model so it runs like a dream. If OSX became like Windows because of something like this I would sadly hav to stop using OSX.

Psystar is a scam. The contact address has changed a few times in the last few days… twice today. They’ve also not received permission from the OSX86 group for the emulator they’re using.

  15. GiantsFanatic Says:

Psystar doesn’t seem legit. Gizmodo is doing a story on it right now. http://gizmodo.com/380488/psystar-exposed-looks-like-a-hoax
Their address has changed a number of times, and all of them have been homes or random businesses. Very suspicious.
