This Brief was meant to be up hours ago, but we had a computer crash just before a meeting. We had to re-edit after we got home tonight.
Twitter friend, @Lindsay25 turned us on to The Great American Road Trip project. It’s three guys driving through the lower 48 in 5 days. They charted a route that is only 7500 miles. Their journey started on Sunday and ends Friday, May 9th. Using mobile broadband, they’ve blogged about the trip all week.
Tivoli Audio announced and Internet radio called NetWorks. It streams audio via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
PicLens is a free broser plug-in that turns browsing photos and video online into an immersive 3D experience. You can download the plug in from here, and you can learn how to make your Web site Piclens ready here.
The Kuro Plasma Displays by Pioneer have black levels that are five times deeper than last year’s models.
Friday night (May 9th) at 9PM EDT, Neal and I will be on Ustream.tv/calilewis live from New Jersey talking about the status of the Big Trip. Come by and join the chat.

Pre-roll ads: if they are classy (like the Beack’s ad), keep them, if it means you can keep ‘on air’ so to speak.
Great show

I’ve been using piclens since its betas, and it quickly became one of my favorite plugins… originally it was built for Safari and only much later did they come out with windows/firefox versions. Sadly, they’ve since let the Safari version fall behind and it doesn’t even work with Safari 3.1 yet… and while I love firefox on windows, I just can’t get myself to use it full time on my powerbook, even b5. It’s better, but still not quite there for me on the mac, so I’ll keep on waiting for them to update the Safari version. (please?!?)

Pre-rolls is cool as long as it is a cool ads. Becks ads is nice. If it’s a cool ads, you could even run it twice as in MacBreak Video. I don’t mind that. Ads from iStockPhoto.com or Archive4FinalCut.com is good.
PS. Why are you talking very slow is the last few episodes??? :)
May 9th, 2008 at 5:59 am
1) yay for eeepc again. yes, I really want to see this market blow up.
2) I’ll reiterate a pre-roll a few seconds shorter. To comment on those who said it should be relevant to the brief, I really don’t have any issue irrelevance. I think additional Cali endorsed products would be nice, along the n810/drobo ads. These prerolls.. if an advertiser decides to target geeks, so be it. I really don’t have to listen to it if I don’t want to, just don’t blame a poor target choice on the format/podcast
3) piclens is neat. I’ve seen it before but haven’t gotten around to trying it out. I’ll have to really give it a try… I have so much software to try (mostly games… haha)

Your coverage of internet radio struck a cord with me.
Having moved to a rural area, we were missing good radio that we could doze off or wake up to in the morning. After trying 3 clock radios we had settled on waking up to static. It was less aggravating them the few stations we could pick up with traditional clock radios.
After a few months of looking around we decided to try a Roku (internet) clock radio. http://www.roku.com/products_soundbridgeradio.php
We now doze off and wake up to great music, BBC or NPR.
It is actually disappointing how few internet radio appliances there are out there. It seems like something that should catch on as the devices are becoming more friendly for the less computer literate consumers.

Has anyone else noticed a new problem with GeekBrief since the switch to Mevio? I am now getting double downloads of every episode showing up in iTunes. It’s rather annoying. It looks like yesterday all the episodes for the last week or two were downloaded as new again.
Tech5 by Dvorak is even worse: it downloads every episode twice daily. The second time is always exactly three hours later. This only happens on my Mevio provided podcasts, and deleting and resubscribing doesn’t resolve the issue.
Cali – I love watchin’ you, but not enough to have every episode show up on my iPhone twice. ;-)
May 9th, 2008 at 7:33 am
Haha! :) I’ve forwarded it to Mevio so they can look into it. It’s not happening to everyone, so I’m not sure what the problem is exactly. Sorry!!
May 9th, 2008 at 8:07 am
Cali- LOL. Actually, I didn’t mind seeing the “Cali interviews Natalie in the Park” episode twice. The two of you together make the best visual my 65″ screen has ever displayed. ;-)
Thanks for forwarding it on. I should subscribe on another machine and see if it’s unique to my Mac Pro. I hadn’t thought of that.

I like that Kuro story ;) Those look like they’re gonna be amazing Tvs.
May 9th, 2008 at 11:25 am
That’s okay. Podcasting is still relatively new technological grounds with you and Neil among the first wave of RSS protocol podcasting pioneers.
^-^~

Wow i’m glad I suscribed to Geekbrief because Piclens ROCKS

off topic,
how do you make the red circle apear around your cursor,
I seem to remebçmber it is a mac os pref, but can´t find it.
Thanks

The red circle is an option on the screen capture software we use called ScreenFlow. I think they call it Radar.

Cali:
One comment to feed back to the people that provided the Beck’s ad. It is a pretty decent ad, but I would recommend a slightly larger font. I download your (small) version and I found it difficult to read the notes between the pictures. At the resolution used for that version, the text is pretty blurry.
Since there is no audio on the ad, I did not get it until I got really close to the screen and read the text.
BTW – I have no idea why anyone would think that a Beck’s commercial is unrelated to geeks. Most of the geeks I know do a lot of beer drinking.
May 10th, 2008 at 6:37 am
Hi Cali,
There is nothing wrong with having a preroll ad before the show! The Beck’s ad is short and sharp. I do have to make onme request though, please keep the out takes at the end!!!
Slate V Continues to run an auto ad that is too long and the same one over and over again. That becomes bothersome.
By the way, I have been a faithful viewer for over a year now and your show is always the first show I watch on my iPod.
Thank you & enjoy your Big Trip!

Just wanted to say thanks for the show…
PicLens looks really cool… however they do not support Firefox on Linux :(
and about the preroll, most of the comments I have read have been mostly positive. The problem with this type of feedback is that most of the people that don’t like the preroll will not take the time to tell you. Or if they are like me and don’t care either way. Will just not watch the add and only put their headphones on when you start the actual show. If you want to encourage viewers like me to watch an add. then you should put the add after the show before the blooper real. I always stick around for the bloopers.
May 10th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
Sorry, I posted this on the wrong show’s notes before, let me try this again.
Gotta say, as a long time Geek Briefer, the short (key is short) preroll add is starting to grow on me… I enjoyed the music in it.
Love the show!

Hello,
I like the geek brief show, but it would be helpful if when you mention an application or something, you would show a popup of where to find more information about it. Also, sometimes you do go a bit fast and it’s hard to keep up if you don’t speak clearly.
Keep up the good work!
May 10th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
Love the show…. and the preroll ads are not bad at all. I think we can all understand. In the end it will be worth it because you are making it just a little bit closer to the BIGTRIP!!!!
May 10th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
As long as the ads are cool and classy, I would watch them entirely. Like the one from Becks’ beer.
I am a fan of Beck but that did not influence my opinion.

May 11th, 2008 at 12:47 am
Wow, great brief!! And about the pre-rolls: If they are as short as they are for now, they’re short enough that I don’t care… ^^
May 11th, 2008 at 7:14 am
On Pre-roll
I really want to fight this commercialism. I do not want commercials on my internet. So I’ll say stop them.
But. I have to be honest and say that since I am addicted to your show they won’t phase me. If it makes you more money go for it!
I am a consumer. Ads really effect me, but I know how to fight them off, mostly. Becks will be my next beer purchased. Never really given it a chance.
I would be worried about new viewers. Being a snob, if I see an ad first thing I assume you have sold out and are just trying to sell products you’ve been paid to promote and I might not subscribe right away. Just sayin.
But being a frequent viewer I know that you would not promote a product you did not feel was worthy of chatter. So just look out for your choice of sponsers. They are a direct reflection of your podcast at this point.
Much luck!

Cali,
I agree – Evernote is really fascinating. However, you mentioned Neal working with Times, but I don’t recall any other mention of this in your briefs. Have any links?
Thanks,
Mark

Doh! Okay – I’m sorry. I must’ve zoned out on GB358 and just completely missed Times.
