Our lease ends in a week on May 21st. We haven’t found the right Geek Brief Mobile yet, so we’re going to have to find a temporary place to live while we continue to look.
This Brief is an update on our goal to take the show on the road. Friends of GBTV keep pointing us toward the super cool CNN Election Express Bus. It’s a mobile news bureau/studio and it’s very cool.
Right now, we’re looking at three very different buses. One is a 1985 Eagle that is very inexpensive but would require quite a bit of work. One is a 1995 VanHool that is nicely converted, but has some red flags. One is a well-maintained 1998 Prevost with low mileage.
We think of what we do as Open Source media. Taking the Brief mobile for a couple years is a big goal and viewers are rallying around the project. Companies are too. Like everything we do in comparison to big media, we think we can do something as cool as the CNN thing for a small fraction of the cost.
This episode is sponsored by Beck’s Beer. It doesn’t have a pre-roll. At the end of the brief, I invite beer aficionados to visit becksbeer.com and talk about a really cool job opportunity. Beck’s is looking for an official blogger. Info about that is available at becks.com.

Was anybody else distracted by the HUGE dust fluff floating across the set? Look halfway through. :p
Keep it up!

I gotta say I’m really excited to see what you all come up with. You won’t have any trouble finding a space for a meetup anymore! haha… although, more ppl might show up…

Excellent condition, low mileage. It would be the safest and most reliable but would cost as much as a small house.
That’s not a negative, guys. It will *be* your house for the next 3-ish years, if all goes according to plan. Take the plunge and go with something that feels right without worrying (too much) about the cost.

Hi Cali,
I am a huge fan of the show and watch it regularly. I just saw brief 362 and was wondering why you used the term “open-source media” to refer to the brief ? Is it truly open source in that the show is released under such a license and it is ok for others to “remix” the show ? Or did you mean something entirely different ?
I am not nitpicking. Sincerely curious.
Keep up the awesome “shiny, happy”-ness !

Oops ! Should have watched it all the way through before commenting ! You actually did explain what you meant.
Sorry for jumping the gun.

I saw the CNN bus recently when it was here in Philly for the dem debate. Talk about IMPRESSIVE! Wow! Of course, they had security 3 deep around the whole thing.
I vote that when the election is over, CNN donates the bus to Cali. In recognition of her outstanding dedication and commitment to geeks everywhere.

Um, Becks in Amsterdam, The Netherlands?
Last I checked, Becks was brewed in Germany.
Maybe you’re thinking of Heinekan?

I live up near the Wisconsin border. If that Wisconsin bus isn’t too far away I’d be willing to go take a look and shoot some video for you.

It must be my Internet Service but the last 2 programs have not played smoothly. The video is jerky and not in sync with the audio. Since no one else is complaining, it must just be me.

@Doug: thanks so much for the offer! I just got back from FedEx shipping a camera to a friend in WI who’s scheduled to go up there (it’s way up north) and film. Thanks again!

I always learn geek stuff watching the brief. Today I learned a non-geek fact: Americans can only drink at age 21

Never under estimate the value of a stable, low-maintenance ride. The Prevost may be more expensive, but consider it a sponsorship challenge. Anyone remember Gene Simmons’ RV on his “Family Jewels” reality show? http://tinyurl.com/6nqvg. What a riot!

@Bob The Becks.com site actually refers to Amsterdam as the location for the writer (and creative team).

Cali – Where is the one in Wisconsin you hope to visit? We are in the Madison area and would love a meet up in this area if you happen to be around us!
May 16th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
A friend is taking video of the bus (upper part of Wisconsin) on Monday. If we decide to move forward with it and visit, we’ll try and have a meetup! :)

Don’t we have enough greenhouse gas. Drop the stupid bus thing. Do skype with interesting people, tell us the news, show us cool gagets and WINDOWS apps, make our lives better and get rich. I am fixing to bail. What a shame, you are so much fun to watch.

I think Mom and Pop would be more accurate and less offensive to the term open source to refer to your podcast. Open source media would be if lots of “no name” people or people who don’t podcast regularly would contribute their knowledge or reviews without reimbursement. Any proceeds would go to the cause. Open source media and Mom and Pop media are both complementary to mainstream media. In many ways your shows is the mainstream source for podcasting. Everything is relative.

While the legal drinking age is 21 in America it is different in other parts of the world, ie 18 in Australia, so the message would be about the legal drinking age in the country the viewer lives, but I think the international audience would understand that.

Hi Guys,
Glad to see you’re considering buses. If you’d like I can offer some advice. I just bought my second one, a 93 Prevost Royale, after having a 72 GM for years. Watch out for rust on the Eagles. On a newer Prevost with very low mileage, it may not have been used much in years, and this will cause mechanical problems, or even require engine work. Have it inspected by a bus specialist. Also, check out http://www.philcooper.com for the best selection on used Prevost coaches. There are some other similar sites, but Phil is great, very knowledgeable and helpful–write him. There are lots of these coaches around. Many details to discuss, but you can get back to me if you want input. Residential type fridges are standard on the big coaches–you just need good batteries and inverters (make sure you get pure sine wave for the kinds of things you want to do). That VanHool has been around a long time–it’s a non-standard conversion I think. There are better deals. I looked hard to find one with an AquaHot.

Half the rent … cool … cool … cool. High-five (~thhhhWAP!~). Yes! Friends of mine who live up around Lake Ray Hubbard say the Texas heat has been oh-PRESSIVE the past few days so you two make sure you drink plenty of water and keep the AC going. What? Fiber optics, too? I’m jealous of you! Ew. B.T.W. As a web-developer for the visually-impaired, I often use a Lynx web browser to test my work and GBTV and iCali home pages look pretty good when viewed with it. I even logged into my GBTV online provile. Well done, Neal and Cali! :D

Hi Cali,
When you take your show on the road stop by West Palm Beach, Florida to say hello.
Love the show, keep up the GREAT work! You and Neal are the best!
