It’s been an extremely slow day for gadget news, so I decided to jailbreak my iPhone today (or, rather, Neal’s iPhone). I decided to use iFuntastic, recommended by TUAW. If you have your iPhone plugged in before opening iFuntastic, it immediately recognizes it and all all you have to do is click on “Unshackle”, then follow directions. I installed the BSD Subsystem since many third party apps require it, then I got to the fun part and installed Pool, and Twinkle. I kept getting an error with Labyrinth, but it eventually installed. If you do get an error, try “Clear Queue”, then try again. Sometimes that helps.
I’ll be playing and testing with it, and will keep you updated! Remember, jailbreaking your iPhone or iPod Touch voids the warranty and the geniuses will not help you!

Hum…. first the beer commercial, then the iPhone jailbreaking… perhaps Limewire music download how-to is in the works? Ha!
I jailbreak my iPhone too because Apple is just taking forever rolling it out in Taiwan. Apple also sells its products like Apple TV for about $50 markup, even though the devices are most likely made here and the general population have half the income of the States… go figure >_<

Ok, so a quick comment about the beer commercial.
I prefer you talking about becks to the preroll. I am not opposed to either one. It just seems to grab my attention better when you discuss it. I haven’t had a Becks in years and the preroll didn’t make me want to have one, but after you talked about it in the last couple of briefs I am actually considering trying it again. I can’t explain why. Maybe it’s because the way you mentioned them, they seemed like, I don’t know, a more personal company and not a giant money hungry corporation.
Anyway, my $.02.
Keep up the great work!

I agree with everything Rod said above about the Beck’s promotion. I know there are people who feel very strongly about the host not making direct advertising comment, but it doesn’t bother me and I think it makes a far more effective promotion of the product. Also, for some reason, it feels less like the dead-space time waste than an impersonal commercial does.
Once I get a new iPhone, my current iPod Touch will move from daily use status to experimental victim status, and I think I’ll give this a shot. I know getting good clear shots of the iPhone screen was a challenge, but they came through very well. All in all, an excellent How-To.

Apple things I won’t jailbreak as they usually work well enough “out of the box” that it isn’t really necessary.
I’ve had a Nokia N800 for a some time now, and it seems to be made for jail-breaking – in a good way, of course! :)
Happy Friday! ^-^~

Cali,
I agree with the comments here – having you politely introduce Becks as the sponsor/advertiser versus having a pre-roll is much more effective to me. I’ll drink a beer when I want one, but I’m more likely to check their website because you mentioned it.
Have a nice weekend…

Cali that was a great brief. I had no idea jail breaking an iPhone was so simple!
I know the jail break voids the warranty; have you heard of any iphones going haywire or starting to crash after a jailbreak? I guess what I am asking is if there is a significant downside to the jailbreak.
Also, any update on when third party apps will be available for the iPhone without doing a jailbreak?
You guys do a wonderful job.

On the topic of beer, specifically Becks, I had no issue with the pre-roll apart from the fact that it wasn’t tuned to the audience. After reading some of the comments above though I would actually think that having Cali discuss Becks and then having a post-roll (say, after the out-takes) would be far more effective.
As an aside, I’m a fan of Becks anyway so maybe I’m biased :) I know the Germans will complain that there are many much better German beers but it’s still a pretty reliable brew when you’re out and about.
Must see if it’s worth checking out the jailbreaking related stuff that’s out there for the iPod Touch which I’m loving at the moment after picking one up on a recent trip to Canada.

I’ve been in the bar business for 5 years and I have never seen someone sell beer the way you do. It’s like you are telling me to try the latest piece of software. You may be on to something….
May 16th, 2008 at 11:32 am
Galen, you’ve never offered to upgrade someones almost empty beer to a newer version? :)
May 16th, 2008 at 11:35 am
I agree with the Beck’s comments.
I saw the pre-roll and had very little interest.
Cali mentions it and I’m looking in every restaurant I go to to see if they carry Becks… haven’t tried one yet because I can’t have beer at lunchtime but I probably will this weekend.

BSD subsystem isn’t a brilliant choice, you should install ‘Cydia’ first, then install the fake BSD subsystem package. Cydia is an open-source alternative to Installer.app, (I use both on my 8GB iPod Touch) and is built off the back of Debian APT. It does exactly what BSD Subsystem does, except with a lot less errors, and is generally more reliable.
I’d also definitely recommend ZiPhone for Windows users, it supports all current firmwares and is a VERY easy way to jailbreak your iPhone/iPod touch. Because of the way jailbreaking iPod Touches/iPhones works, there’s virtually no chance you’ll encounter any problems. If you do, restoring WILL fix any major issues, and there are patches for more minor worries.
Also, the 2.0 firmware release is scheduled in June, along with the ‘App Store’. From there you can BUY applications, but free ones will be supported. iPod Touch users have to pay for the 2.0 upgrade, but iPhone users don’t. Also, Apple have enforced very tight restrictions on what goes on sale in the App store, so keep jailbreaking alive. Any questions, feel free to email me at:

“Sir, can I offer you a Becks v.2.0? Or, if you like what you are drinking why not try Becks SP2, just like Becks but with a few important upgrades and bug fixes.”
May 16th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
What’s with the 21 thing? Do you have mostly kids viewing? Just run the pre roll and thank them at the end, even better do like Kevin and drink one on the show – NOW that would make me buy a CASE. Lot’s of dead time, do some editing.
May 16th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
um, i would love to be proved wrong, bit isn’t this illegal?
i don’t know if you want to openly annoy apple like that.
love the show though. keep it up.
May 16th, 2008 at 5:42 pm
@Robin – No, it’s not illegal, it’s just against the user agreement, so it voids the warranty.
May 16th, 2008 at 6:31 pm
I agree with the comments about the in episode ads being preferred over the pre-roll.
However, if you continue to do that with a beer sponsor then you absolutely lose all your teachers who are showing the brief in class or recommending it to their students (at least I hope they don’t still show the brief in their classes with the beer ads).
By my count this is the last episode with the trial of the beer ads. If they continue, you will lose me as a viewer and I will let others know why I quit watching.
May 16th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
@DPeach: Thanks for your feedback! We’re already committed to two more prerolls and six mentions, to be completed by June 22nd. After that, we won’t be accepting any more alcohol advertisers. Like I’ve previously stated, having teachers use GeekBrief.TV in the classroom means a lot to us!

I have to say that i have jailbroken my ipod touch, and i recently went to an apple store to have it changed because the sleep button was not working anymore.
I just restored my ipod before bringing it to the store, and i did not have to pay a cent!
I just wanted to say that they do not check wether it is jailbroken or not, so go on and jailbreak!
Also, i wanted to introduce to you Cali what is called Jiggy runtime. It allows applications written in jiggy code to run on the iPhone. The best team for that kind of applications so far is called the {Dav Team}. If you want to try jiggy, here is the source to add: http://davteam.com/repo.xml
Great show once again, and i love the commercial for the beer!
May 16th, 2008 at 11:09 pm
As people mentioned in the comments for the last show, there are a large number of places in the world where 21 is not the legal drinking age. Referring to it makes the brief seem more (and unnecessarily) US-centric.
(Otherwise, I don’t mind the beer ads, in either form).
May 17th, 2008 at 12:51 am
@Cali: You might want to use BossTool to move your application folder to the media partition, otherwise you might run out of space after installing a few applications.
@Ryan Barnes: ZiPhone isn’t really a good solution, sure it might be an easy one, but you will get some problems too, check out: http://mytrini-iphone.blogspot.com/2008/04/sigh-ziphone-30-use-if-you-wish.html
Myself, I used PwnageTool to unlock my iPhone, works great, here’s the tutorial I have used to unlock my iPhone: http://www.hackthatphone.com/114/iphone_pwnage_mac.html
Linux and Windows users, might want to check out this website: http://wikee.iphwn.org/news:xpwn_release

@Florin: I completely agree with you. A friend of mine recently used ZiPhone to jailbreak his iPhone, and halfway through the process, an error showed up. Thanks for the tip on Pwnage!
@Tony: The drinking age in Europe is 18, so i agree with you that it makes the brief look a little bit made only for the US. But again, the show is great and sometimes very funny, so it doesnt really matter!

May 18th, 2008 at 4:15 pm

@ Cali, So what are you and Neal going to do with your iPhones with the new 3G version comes out in June?
May 21st, 2008 at 9:16 pm
as far as i know……
if you restore the iphone through itunes, it negates the jailbreaking process.
i have had my old phone replaced under warranty already. and this one had problems from the get go…..
May 23rd, 2008 at 10:09 am
Hi Cali,
Are you going to do the play by play of getting the new 3G iPhone when it comes out next month? (Assuming it does come out next month.) The show was really great last year. The buzz on the net is that Mr. Jobs will announce the new iPhone June 9th at the WWDC.

I’m curious, I can see the benefit of a jailbroken iPhone, but what would be the benefit of a jailbroken iTouch? I’ve got the iTouch and it works well, but I can’t help but feel like I’m missing out on something, I just don’t know what it is. (I’m holding out until June for the iPhone)
