I'm afraid I'm going to have to call bulls**t on the PS3/HDTV using more power than a refrigerator over the course of a year!

I've heard junk like this before and I did some research. The claim before was that even an HDTV left in stand-by mode takes more energy than a fridge.

Well, I checked out my HDTV and found that in stand-by mode, my TV takes 274 watts when on and 5 watts when in standby mode. I calculated that I would have to leave my TV in standby mode for ~80+ hours for every hour it was on to generate the same amount of power usage. No where near the usage of a fridge.

The only way a PS3 or HDTV could use nearly the same amount of power as a fridge is if they were left on all the time. I don't know about you, but I never leave my TV on all the time and I rarely leave my Wii on. (Don't have a PS3)

I even put my computer to sleep these days, unless I'm downloading something or need to leave it on for some other reason.

Sorry, Cali, but I think you should have done a few minutes of research before reporting it. Even the story you liked to is suspect. They claim that "videogame consoles and plasma flat-screen TVs are major electricity guzzlers, even when left on stand-by.", yet they never mention anything about standby mode again after that outrageous claim.

The guys over at Revision3 did a story about this subject a while back in episode 17 of Systm (http://revision3.com/systm/energy/). Check it out, I think you will see just how BS this "study" really is.

Cali,

I don't believe it! The free coffee with any purchase was my suggestion the minute Starbucks put up their on-line suggestion box (the one Natali D.C. didn't care for, for whatever reason). For one, I am psyched, as 2 hours is far more than I ever spend in a Starbucks anyway. Guess I'm a chugger -- not a sipper.

Feeling like some canned bacon. Bye!

Well, if the world ended and among the MREs was canned bacon...I think it would be great. But, as long as I can get bacon through other means....

Plus its kind of a lot of bacon....don't think I could eat that much in one sitting. Though in the days before high cholesterol, high blood pressure and expanding waistlines...I had been known to make whole packages of bacon disappear....

This week's "Clueless Complementariness" award goes to Starbuck's for offering two hours "free" complimentary Internet access when other coffee houses that charge far less than five dollars for a cup of coffee offer unlimited access. ^-^~

I don't think many people let their PS3s run continuosly through the year, as fridges do. Therefore I think this study is presented very tabloid-like, while there is realy no shocking news here. You can't realy compare electronic device that you use so diffrently :)

Also, whats up with Neal? Common, give us the WiiFit update! ;D

oh btw, the remote controll finder should have a wall mounted panel of some sort. I would like to just be able to walk over to a panel and press the right button for the thing I'm searching for. I always forget where I put things, and I live in a 9 square meter room!! D: Crazy

Canned bacon... Yeah, I'm thinking that's a well-advised pass.

(And can we already say that Plurk's most significant contribution to the world is turning out to be linguistic? But now I have to teach all these new variations to my spell checker.)
