The real problem with the tethering is because of AT&T, not Apple. Tethering to your computer actually violates your TOS for the data plan, and if you get caught (simply by having too much data usage on your account) AT&T will not only cancel your account, but will charge you for all the data and throw fines on top! That’s a scary prospect, so I’m partly glad Apple has done what they can to keep uninformed customers from suffering this fate.

I saw a story on the news not too long ago about a guy who had downloaded some entire movies over his data connection, and got hit with a >40,000 dollar bill!!!! Just something to keep in mind…

thanks Cali! the ferrite beads GSM defection is a great idea! I am expecting there will be some hard-core bead-warping wiring when I move into my new place next week!
one thing, though, for a more professional result, get some heat shrink wrap while you are at the eDepot; slide it over the bead and shrink wrap it, then it will look as god as some OEM jobs!

I also find the mini DV connector a hassel, especially in the classroom where kids are more likely to snap it off. I went low-tech though and started reinforcing the connection by using the hand strap of the camera, string, or whatever I could get to create secure connection. The only downside is that the whole camera was at risk of tipping off the tripod if someone kicked the cable. What I’d like to see is a secure connection to the camera, but a quick release further down the cable just in case.
Not sure if you want to show up at tech events with a shoestring around your camera, but that’s how I fixed your cable problem.

I am liking the netflix going to branch out stuff. I am seeing it that they are testing the waters to decide if there is a market for them. Don’t blame you for not getting on the blu-ray bandwagon. I don’t think it looks a good as the hd-dvd formats.
I wish hd-dvd would have won that race.

We stopped doing the encoding ourselves a while ago, because at the time there was a very small audience for the TiVo episodes and it was taking us 2 hours additional per episode. After we stopped, TiVo actually started encoding it themselves, and the audience grew.

Everyone is saying they no longer are getting episodes, so I’m working on figuring out what we need to bring it back.

Since I own neither an iPhone or a MacBook, I’m not sure if he was using NetShare, but I saw a coffee-shop customer plug in his MacBook into a Blackberry via USB. He might have been transferring data or then again he might have been accessing the Internet via the Blackberry’s cellular data access because the WiFi in this coffee-shop is really unreliable. ^..^~

To me, the big drawback of the Netflix streaming is that it’s still SD 480i! A Blu-ray player is for an HDTV. I won’t be satisfied until they’re streaming HD like Apple or at least DVD quality. I’m sure it’s just a matter of time though, Netflix really wants to move most of their movie distribution to the net.

The direct link is no longer working. This is frustrating. Since I spend half my time in Europe and half my time in America I picked up Nokia’s 6120c to use on both continents. I have been able to tether the phone using AT&T without problem. With the unlimited data plan I was paying $20 a month. Now that I have switched to the iPhone, I am paying $30 a month and cannot tether, no video communications and no MMS. I just be switching back the Nokia soon if Apple and AT&T don’t work something out.

I have gmail, however I don’t get many emails so I find that the filters aren’t necessary

… and it looks like Netshare is gone. At least as of 11:37pm Central time, it is not available on the U.S. iTunes store.

Ugh. I want tethering – I pay for unlimited data don’t I? Why can I tether my Blackberry but not my iPhone? It seems like some of Apples “rules of proper iPhoning” are a bit absurd.

Great show though! As always.

what is it with the whole bluetooth not linking to anything but a handsfree device on the iphone anyway…. Bad Apple.. let us use our iphone the way we want to…

Since the iPhone user is already paying AT&T for phone service and data access, it’s hard to see why either Apple or AT&T should want to keep NetShare off the market. If anything, NetShare might help both sell more products and services.

Gmail does have pretty impressive email filters for their users. I’m just too spoiled for email clients (like Mac OSX Mail.APP) to use web mail.

gmail filters are nice, but they really need to let us look specifically into the header information. fastmail.fm has one of the strongest filtering abilities. I still use it for my “professional” email but it’s annoying because a) can’t get a good gmail name and b) gmail’s search ability is unmatched.

regarding the live show, I found the chat to be a bit difficult to follow. anyone else feel that way? it got discouraging to attempt to participate.

GMail filters rock! I use them for everything. The only bummer is I don’t have a live Cali Lewis in my GMail filter page :o(
