It took 40 minutes to update my iPhone with the 2.0.1 update, but so far, it’s been good. The most annoying issue fixed by the update (for me) was how hitting the delete button once would activate delete, delete, delete, delete, etc., until my whole line of text disappeared. iPhone App reviews are at www.iCali.tv.
John Carmack, anything but an Apple fanboi says the iPhone is more powerful than the Nintendo ds and PSP combined.
The Boynq Swing is possibly the greatest design for a USB hub ever conceived.
Planon, the company that brought us the DocuPen scanner (covered on Brief 22), now has a tiny pocketable printer called the PrintStik. It connects to a mobile phone or laptop via bluetooth, and based on one of the promotional photos, it’s apparently ideal for printing in a restroom stall.
Maclife.com has a DIY solution for stoping GSM buzz coming from speakers when a mobile phone is nearby. It involves ferrite beads and electrical tape. The MacLife step-by-steps are here.
We thought we had the fireplace portablity market cornered with our iYule Log, but the Travelmate Portable Fireplace has taken the throne with their fireplace in a briefcase. I’m just not sure how a story about fireplaces starts circulating in August!

Cali,
I enjoy watching your show so much, I have decided to give it a go myself. I don’t know what I’ll do, but I feel I have to do something. Thank you so much for inspiring me. I hope that I can be as successful as you and Neil have been. I would love to quit my day job and be a life caster full time. How awesome that would be!!!
Keep up the great work, your show is wonderful1!

That’s great! Let us know when you have it up!

I wonder if the PrintStik will have the same problem that almost all thermal printers have, longevity in their prints, leave a printout in the sun or in a hot car and over time it will disappear… might not be the best idea for a bus in summer?

That’s “id” software, like id vs. ego. Not “i” – “d”. Don’t lose your geek cred!

By now I know about id from Twitter and email, thanks!
I’m not a gamer, I’ve never been shy about that. Lack of personal interest in gaming doesn’t affect my geek cred, it only indicates I didn’t fact check. Bad Cali! ;)

Hi Cali,
your ending GB graphic is not appearing on the HD version of GB. What takes it’s place is a checkerboard square. Did University of Tennessee decide to sponsor GB? Love the show.

I’ve always called id “eye D” heh. I know it’s wrong, but it’s hard to fix it when everyone you grew up with said it for years.
As for Carmack not being an Apple fan boy, I believe he’s always been a fan of apple. Hasn’t he been at some Apple keynotes? He isn’t a fan boy in the annoying sense, but was a proponent of mac gaming for a while. Though, in the ending years of the power pc macs, he did say it was falling behind, being more difficult than it was worth to optimize for.
I think where the iphone has a potential in gaming isn’t it’s power though, but more in line w/ the casual pick up and go games.. not really FPS or “hardcore” gaming. Something you can play on the metro for 20 minutes and be done with it.

One of the “hidden” design advantage of the Boyng Swing is that with the ports facing downward from their dongles, they’re less likely to collect dust and dirt, helping to assure optimal contact every time one of the ports is engaged.

Does anyone know if the Boynq Swing is a powered USB hub? I can not tell.

I know you love Bacon, but you really should see the special about Pig-Farming in This American Life TV Show, it changed a lot of people’s mind about Bacon. ;-)

I watched on iTunes myself.
Not trying to push you into anything, but I think you should always see the other side of things too.

I’m getting the same thing on the end credits, just a checkerboard box. I’m subscribed to the Zune feed, if that helps.
Episode 404, and no “page not found” joke? Oh well, I’m too much of a geek I guess.

As long-time vegetarian, one of the most important things I’ve learned is to respect the choices of others, especially those that differ from my own. ^..^~

I LOVE This American Life, and have seen that episode before.

Hey Paul, maybe that was the joke?

I have another solution for the GSM buzz. My wife’s phone (Sony Ericsson, whose keys broke right down the middle within the first two months) made a similar noise. One solution for the grand investment of $0.15 was a little anti-static bag. Since the buzz was only audible at night when her phone was next to the speaker of the alarm clock, we put the phone in the bag and – voila – silence.
Good luck on the Big Trip.
