Shownotes:
Vincent Laforet’s short film that we mentioned yesterday is online at Canon. He used the 5D Mark II to shoot the film. The behind the scenes footage is online at SmugMug.
We’ve all been waiting to see a real live phone built on Android, an open source platform. Today, T-Mobile, HTC and Google showed us the G1. It doesn’t have multi-touch, but it has a physical keyboard and a trackball. More pros/cons in the show.
Sony announced the VAIO TT, an ultraportable notebook with Blu-ray included. Anyone know what the “TT” stands for? Leave a comment below.
Eye-Fi got an update. It’s an SD card that automatically uploads your photos to your computer or a photosharing site like SmugMug. The update makes uploads faster.
Microsoft applied for a very interesting patent. They’re calling it “Mobile Device Collaboration”. The idea is that you and your friends can all lay your phones side by side and aggregate resources for one large display, surround sound, extra battery life, and more.
You can save money on domain name registrations and renewals from GoDaddy.com with discount codes GB1, GB2 and GB3. For an explanation of each code, click here.

oh boy, you caved =) Well, welcome to the canon club. I’d like to see you use the 5DmkII with more 3rd party lenses to see how they fair in the movies. Don’t get too caught up in L envy!
And that mobile device collaboration is a neat idea. I’m not sure how practical it really could be, except maybe camping/similar scenario… and you need to get some battery life to make an emergency call. Neat still.

umm.. the brief ends abruptly. What’s up Cali?
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:01 pm
aggregation, accumulation, assemblage, assembling collecting, collection …
huh … Apple does the same thing with patents before a big R&D bout.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:02 pm
I second that. Brief ended abruptly for me too.

Umm… G1 is kinda cool, although it lacks of multi-touch, video recording etc. I have an iPod touch and so far and it works great, but I’m really exciting to see the future of Andriod OS, from a developer perspective it has bigger potential than Apple, I don’t wanna spend a lot of time working on an app and eventually rejected by Apple :( Anyway we’ve only known a little bit ’bout the spec of G1, can’t really judge anything by now :) I don’t know whether can I post link to other website or not, but if you google “GSMarena” that website has some interesting stuff on G1. Btw, Symbian has one more potentially strong competitor now, LOL

didn’t end THAT harshly.. Swiftly maybe but still ok.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:08 am
Is it me again or did the Brief ended up abruptly?
September 24th, 2008 at 3:33 am
Yup..it just stopped during the eye-fi segment.
BTW, what’s the point of having the popup video controls when you can’t even go forward or back in the video? I wish they would use a consistent video player for the embedded video.

I was waiting for you to do a review of Android on the G1. I watched ep 434 and I was like where is it?! I am excited about playing with it in October.
September 24th, 2008 at 7:43 am
It appears that the issue was with the Flash player above, which has been switched out. Anyone watching one of the download links wasn’t having problems. If you have any other issues, let me know. Sorry about the delay!

The video on these DSLRs seem cool and that is a nice little clip, but I don’t see who’s going to actively use it. There’s no way videographers aren’t going to switch over to a DSLR to shoot their stuff and I don’t see any serious amateur and pro running around using video at all. Hell, my D3 has liveview which people were saying was great and I nor any of the pros I know ever use it. If this were a sub 1K camera I can see photo enthusiasts going for it, but at a price point set for the serious amateur, pro, or a person who has money to burn I don’t see the feature taking off at this stage.
September 24th, 2008 at 10:32 am
oops typo, meant “are” in the word after videographers, sorry
September 24th, 2008 at 11:29 am
Ok Cali….where oh where did you pre-order the 5D Mark II? B&H isn’t taking orders (I called them as well) and I want to buy it from a respectable place. I just want to get my camerageek / techgeek little hands on it as soon as I can! I almost caved a few month ago and bought the 5D, but held out….I can’t wait!
September 24th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
I think I shall be buying me one of them!! Great Brief btw. I do believe you said you had sites to release? :o))
September 24th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
I find it a little hard to believe that the 5D is going to be “gadget of the year”. It’s a camera directed at the pro/semi-pro market and is big, heavy and expensive. This isn’t something that every gadget freak is going to run out and buy. Really, unless one is going to be shooting wall sized pictures in low light, will the benefits really be noticeable? As for the making of video; this was a professional shoot with 10’s of thousands of dollars worth of equipment and people. Would the two of you really use this camera to shoot video instead of the video equipment you already have?
I’m not criticizing your choice, I just think this camera is being hyped way too much and calling it gadget of the year just adds to that hype.
When will you get your hands on the G1? I’d like to hear an iPhone devotee’s opinion.

awesome brief. this one packed all the info right in. keep it up! :)
September 24th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
I love your briefs… entertaining and informative… a winning combination. I was wondering why you use the moniker Cali Lewis though since Wikipedia says your name is luria?
Inquiry minds want to know ;-)

@John: Thanks for the nice comments. :) It’s all explained at the bottom of this page:

I’m incredibly excited about the G1. It will replace my aging Nokia N90. However, reports of it not having an accelerometer are false. It has one, but the built-in apps do not yet recognize it. If the Android folks have any sense (I assume they do) this will change with a software update. Some third-party apps already make use of it.
I think the biggest problem with the G1 is that it does not record video! Hopefully this will be fixed by the open source community. If not, I might have to go buy myself a stand-alone digital camera.

I’ve never read the credits, very interesting. I’m curious to find out more about the G.I.A. Did it go anywhere? In your non-web-personality life which name do you use?
September 25th, 2008 at 9:56 am
We’ve done stuff here and there with the G.I.A. I go by whichever name someone feels comfortable calling me. :) Of course, my family calls me Luria. Neal calls me whichever is appropriate for the situation.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:54 am
Do you recommend a place to pre-order the Mark II? So many places have pre-orders, but which ones do you think are legit?
October 2nd, 2008 at 8:56 pm
Vincent Laforet’s movie has been pulled from the cannon page due to high demand, I hope they can get it back up, It was an awesome video!
