Shownotes:
IDG (the company that organizes Macworld) is holding a town hall meeting at Macworld. This is your chance to give them your feedback on what you want from future Macworlds. What should it be post-Apple involvement? In Brief #485, I talk about what I want to see in 2010. Leave your thoughts in the comment section below!
If you follow me on Twitter, you know I finally got my Canon 5D Mark II! You can see the full HD video I shot and pictures at cali.smugmug.com. I’ll be posting all sorts of photos and video there as I practice and (hopefully) get better.
The Dev-Team released an iPhone 3G unlock called yellosn0w.
I have never talked about a sewing machine on GeekBrief.TV before. The Brother Quattro 6000D warrants it. Check out the stats in the video!
You can save money on domain name registrations and renewals from GoDaddy.com with discount codes GB1, GB2 and GB3. For an explanation of each code, click here.

Hey Cali, I’m very happy to hear that you’re going to MacWorld! If you and Neal are in town Monday night, please stop by our Tweetup! :)

So are you going to use that RCA 44 mic? Or is it just a prop? I see the countryman still in use.
Real working 44s are really expensive, Wes Dooley makes great new ones and other models that don’t have that exact look, but are tons cheaper and still have the ribbon magic.
Can the Brother machine sew leather? My kid has a Singer, with a treadle, no fancy automation stuff.

1. LOL @ your reaction to yellowsn0w!
3. I totally agree with you about the future of Macworld. I’ve never been to SxSW but that sounds like a cool/fun way to keep it alive and kicking

-is that veronica belmont in the background on 2:09 @ last year’s macworld?
-the brothers’ quattro 6000d is amazing because it’s an embroidery & quilting machine as well as sewing machine in addition to the hd display & other high-end features. albeit it’s (at the cheapest deal i’ve heard) twice the price of the canon 5d mark ii.
…which brings me to my question:
have you heard of threadbanger.com? it’s a sewing podcast i sometimes watch. they use the same intro theme as geekbrief. confusing yet curious how’d that happen?
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:24 pm
Actually, that’s the back of my head, then Neal and William following :)
I think I’ve heard of threadbanger, funny that they use the same one. It’s from Soundtrack, so you’ll also hear it on TV shows every once in a while.

Cali. Good show. Interested in the camera updates. I found your idea about the future of Macworld interesting and would support. Enjoy tge show.

Happy to hear your coming! See you at Macworld!
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:24 pm
Happy New Year! :-) I’m with you in that MacWorld would do well to cast it’s future with all the people who use Macs to create cool things (like GBTV), listen to them and pay attention to what kind of tools they need to keep the creativity going. ^..^~

If anyone’s curious, the secure data center is for Limestone Networks which uses the renovated former Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. It’s pretty impressive after reading about it.

Cali, welcome to the world of the 5d mk ii! If you want a great lens to start with, you should have gotten the 5d mk ii kit – the 24-105 L is a great lens that has image stabilization and great range (besides being an “L”). We’re adding you to the 5d wiki too (http://planet5d.com). Welcome to the club!

Nice, and yeah, the 5DmkII sorta gets you looking at lenses again because of the sensor resolution. You start crying when you add up all the glass you want =)
And that data center.. damn. I’d like to see the power meter on it, heh

Macworld 2010:
- Without Apple I would say it might be tough to keep it going as it has been.
- I think Cali’s idea about getting the entertainment industry more involved is a good one. I would also say to get the business community more involved as well. I would try to get Oracle involved with Macworld. This might be an easy thing to do since Oracle is right there in Redwood City. If Macworld gets Oracle involved, so does the rest of the business community.
- One thing I would like to see from Apple or Macworld 2010 is a media server. With all of the content that Apple sells on iTunes, this seems to be a logical choice for a new product from Apple.
That’s my two cents.

I’m in the DFW area as well and would like to know where that vault is, and what the back story is. At the end I hear Neal (maybe) mention something about Jack Ruby and the vault.
Love the show !

So was that the Westlake office complex? I worked there for about ten years and was always amused by the giant christmas ornaments stored in the parking garages most of the year.
On another note, my wife used to work at the Federal Reserve counting old money before it was destroyed.

Hey Cali! Does jailbraking an iPhone mean that the iPhone can’t longer run apps from the iTunes store? And what about the apps that were here in the first place, like the photo app, the ipod app, Safari…
I think that the phone app and the SMS app can’t be used on an jailbroken or unlocked iPhone. Tell me what you think! :)
