My very first Internetworking experience was done from a machine Woz designed, in the form of dialing in to a public access Unix buletin board system that resided on the same identical model.

The year was 1987, the machine was the Apple ][ and the Unix BBS was the SDF-1, which was located in Dallas, TX. ^··^~

@Linh, the idea of a notebook computer as expensive – and as wonderful! – as a new MacBook that doesn’t have a user-replaceable battery bothers me, too. It makes the MacBook seem “disposable.” ^..^~

I just wanted to pop in for a second and say THANK YOU!
When I started watching Geek Brief a couple months ago I was a hard core Windows guy.

Through watching the show every time a new one comes out, I’ve seen everything that Apple has to offer above Windows. There are things I like about Windows, but I think Apple is moving towards the next generation, and are definitely succeeding.

I recently bought my Toshiba A215. Now, don’t get me wrong I LOVE IT! It does everything for me. But lately, I find myself saying “It’s just not a Mac.”

So, thank you again. The next purchase here soon will be my first Mac, and I’m geeked! I’m going for the 15 inch Mac Pro, and I can’t wait to make the long trip to my local Apple retail store to get it.

THANKS SO MUCH! You guys are awesome please never stop the show.

Please forgive the errors in my previous comment. I’m still learning how to use tiny screen keypad on my Nokia N800. Knowing the GBTV cast and crew are inCREDibly busy during the MacWorld and other events, we really appreciate someone (yourselves or an intern) taking the time to post show notes for each GeekBrief podcast, and don’t mind waiting for them. You two are doing a fabulous job with this new media and new technology and you are among those who are at its forefront, which is why your participation in MacWorld and other events are so important. The vendors need to hear from you about what works, what doesn’t what’s fabulous and what isn’t, and what you’d like to see in the future. ^..^~

Jay, the problem I have with the battery is that I’m not sold on it yet. I really didn’t like the idea on the iPhone, but given it’s now $200 w/ contract, it’s a little more acceptable.

I’m just not convinced we’re there yet for notebooks. I suppose someone has to start the ball rolling, but I still see ipods suffering from early battery death while they are otherwise perfectly good.

However, I just read the service for replacing it will be $180. Not tooo bad, given it’s suppose to be a bigger battery.

Actually, can we still get to the HDD? I don’t think I read anything about that

Assuming the 5-year/1000-cycle claim holds water, I think Apple did a really good thing with the 17-incher battery. Smart consumers will realize that having the additional on-time is worth much more than having the ability to replace batteries every few years. My biggest concern is with Li-Ion tech in general; have been doing R/C (helis) for several years and seen a good share of “accidents” caused by improper and, many times, proper Li-Ion handling.

Phil clearly hit the mark on why this is the last MacWorld Apple will attend… “3.4M customers visit Apple stores a week”… “that’s 100 MacWorlds every week!” :-|

Seems like I’m the only one who’s not complaining about the battery. Heck, if it really gives me 8hrs, instead 4, I guess I can bear going to the store for replacement (which is..once every 4 years?)

Why complain about the non-removable battery? This isn’t the 1990s anymore, very few people carry second batteries anymore, and the battery technology is far more advanced than it used to be.

You’re far more likely to replace the laptop before the battery wears out than to need to get it replaced, and the advantages you get from this choice– more battery life, less weight, more robust computer, etc, far outweigh the convenience of having a battery you can remove (But never need to.)

Apple is an innovative company, and it seems whenever technology improves, or Apple moves the ball forward, people complain about the fact that the new computer is different from the last one. You want the upside of significantly more battery life, right? Well, you can’t have it with a removable battery.

People complained about Apple going to USB, but now you don’t hear anyone pining for the days of ADB.

This is the same thing….

This was a VERY disappointing Macworld. And this for the last Macworld, too. No wonder the stock went down after todays “yawning” announcements. Let’s see:

NO Mac Mini Update
NO iMac Update
No Apple TV Update
No new hardware.. period.

The 17″ Macbook was not really a newsworthy item either. Let’s hope Apple can save it by announcing an update for the Max Mini? Geez, I’m grasping here, people…. Help me….

iLife was a 1/3 of the keynote…your kidding right?

It has faces…like Picasa and Adobe Photoshop Elements has had for almost a year now.

G. Band updated…there’s a huge market covered now. We can all sleep better.

iTunes sales remain the same last two years even though the devices available to download (touch, iphone) have increased.

17 in Macs…nice..oh wait the battery cannot be replaced without a Mac support person. Hey thanks for restricting me even more…

When I heard the 17″ non-removable battery was true.. ugh… wth Apple?!?! These are the kinds of things pushing me away from them. Sorta letting it slide on the ipod line, but this is getting to be too much.

Otherwise, a pretty lack luster keynote. DRM-free itunes too.. that I’m pretty excited about. I can go away from amazon now and have a far more seamless experience.
