Shownotes:
I like most companies I get to interact with in the course of producing Geek Brief, but I LOVE small family-run businesses that have leveraged the power of the Internet to have an international reach. SmugMug is a great example. It was founded by Don MacAskill and he later hired Dad and brothers to help. It keeps growing and growing and best of all they’re a profitable company in Silicon Valley.
I talked with Don about starting SmugMug and the resent relationship between them and Vincent Laforet. Vincent and his team are using a Canon 5D Mark II, a RED camera and a Panasonic HVX200 (the camera we use) to document one of the world’s top surfers, Jamie O’Brien. He’s also sharing some behind-the-scenes explanations about the equipment he’s using. SmugMug gave me permission to embed the videos on GeekBrief.TV (links below) and there you’ll find links to the full 1080p videos hosted at SmugMug.com.
Part 1: “Taking Off!”
Part 2: “Behind the Scenes 1″
Part 3: “Waiting for the Swell”
Part 4: “Backdoor Switchfoot”
Part 5: “Behind the Scenes II”
Part 6: “Fish Eye View”
This was shot right after Macworld, and I was running on very little sleep. I think it shows! :)

sweet, I love smugmug. A little pricey, but gets what I need for my photography work. It’s good for sharing private stuff.
I still prefer flickr for the “social networking” aspect of it. Stuff like the 365days project. It’s just fun.
Now smugmug just needs to give us a discount for multiple accounts… I’m not exactly sure I want to mix my personal stuff with my professional work, heh.

If he is looking for waves, it’s going to be huge in a few days. Big storm surge coming! I am curious how they keep the Steadycam so ’steady’ with the wind I can see in the shot.

SmugMug is one of my favorites of the image-hosting services and also that of many in the graphic arts who work with photography and video. They are a “class-act” and the quality of their service is undeniable. Off topic: Cali looks simply adorable in her light blue tee and Bond Street cap. ^..^~

Jamesy — That was an absolutely ignorant and misinformed comment.

Jamesy – The LDS disavowed polygamy in 1904. Calling all LDS polygamists is like calling all white Americans slavers. There are probably “fundamentalists” out there who still follow these illegal practices (just as there are people currently supporting slavery such as in parts of the chocolate industry), but the church itself does not condone polygamy and I understand will excommunicate anyone who does it. A more valid criticism may be their public support of things like Prop8 (check wiki). Whatever the case, SmugMug should be judged on the site itself. I’m not a big fan of some of the things the Catholic church has done in its long history, but it has also done some good things and that Sistine chapel is something special…. ;-)
