GBTV #510 | Amazon v2, Wireless Mics, Nikon Lens, Pionner News, Microsoft Ad

Shownotes:

We’ve been anticipating version 2 of the Amazon Kindle pretty much since the first version was released. The newest feature I’m excited about is called Read-to-me. It’s text to speech so you can listen to your books when you can’t read them. I’ve pre-ordered mine and will have an unboxing and my initial thoughts as soon as it arrives! Both my Kindle and Neal’s Kindle are on eBay. If my Kindle sells for more than the new one, the profits will be given to my favorite charity, Heifer International. Here are the links:

With the transition to Digital TV, anyone like schools, churches, community organizations who use devices like wireless mics that operate in frequencies between 698 and 806 MHz face a potential issue. The frequencies will be sold, and when that happens, it’ll be illegal to operate these devices. To understand the rules in more detail, please visit geekbrief.tv/wirelessmic.

Nikon announced a new lens to improve low light performance. It’s called the AF-S DX 35mm f1.8 G lens.

Pioneer will be leaving the world of plasma displays and will be spinning off their DVD division to Sharp.

During the Grammy’s, Microsoft aired a great commercial!

Its actually been illegal to use most wireless mics on those frequencies since they were developed. That’s something the mic manufacturers/sellers never bothered to tell the buyers. The FCC has largely chosen to ignore those violations until now. When it was simply a few TV channels in that frequency band in any given market, it was easy to find unused frequencies in your area. And no one complained. But under the new plan, it won’t just be a few channels in each market that may be in use. And once the new band plan starts being used, the odds of finding a clear channel are going to drop considerably, and complaints will rise…along with FCC enforcement.

Great Geekbrief. Check out the Nikon AF- 50mm f1.8D, it isn’t a DX lens (it will also work great on the larger Full Format Sensors) it costs $125 dollars on Amazon and it is even faster for less bills! I enjoy the piece about the Wireless microphones, I wanted to check out the link in the show notes but it appears that it isn’t working right now. Perhaps I caught the show right when it was released. Thanks again!

    Nice Ad. “I’m a PC and I am 4 and a half.”

BTW, they should have a similar Mac ad with iPhoto and Mail. It would be definitely quicker and easier.

@PJ – What feed are you subscribed to? If you download directly are you having the same issue?

    Anyone else?

  9. PJ Says:

@Cali – The feed address is https://geekbrief.podshow.com/feed.xml. I now am downloading directly and end up replacing the file that started downloading in iTunes. The downloads are going very slow tho, and I’m on a work T line, and other programs are downloading at normal speeds.

  10. PJ Says:

I am subscribed to the feed at https://geekbrief.podshow.com/feed.xml. I end up downloading directly and swapping out the partially downloaded iTunes file. But even that download goes insanely slow, 33% so far at 130p here, and I started downloading at 10a. And I’m at my work with T lines and every thing else downloads fine.

    Well done, Microsoft. Well done.

Hi Cali – Like you, when I first saw that Microsoft ad I thought it was the cutest commercial I had ever seen. What also came to mind is that Microsoft finally got it right. I live in Los Angeles but was living up north when I first saw the ad, so I was unable to record it and share it on my blog immediately. I planned on doing that when I got home. Shortly after arriving home in late Feb, I saw your episode #510 and saw your reaction was similar to mine. Today, I was writing my blog entry about the ad and was going to link to a YouTube version of it because I hadn’t seen it on my TV connected to my Mac. I had just finished typing the words “so I include the YouTube video below” when the commercial came on CBS. I transferred it to iMovie and added it to my blog entry and my MobileMe Gallery. It was amazing, literally within 20 seconds of finishing that sentence, it came on.

I just thought it was funny how you and I had the same reaction only you beat me to the punch since I was away from home.

Anyway, I enjoy your Podcasts and follow you on Twitter. In fact, I started using Tweetdeck after seeing it on your podcast and love it. I like grouping my tweets so I can focus on my favorite tweeters (like you).

Take care and keep up the great work!

Jim (I’m a Mac and I am 45 years old – and not as cute as Kylie)

Today, I finally got around to writing my blog entry about this commercial. Since I had yet to see the ad on my TV which is connected to my Mac, I was going to embed a YouTube video of the ad. Within 20 seconds of typing the words “so I include the YouTube video below” on my blog, the commercial came on CBS as I was watching a basketball game. The timing was amazing. Anyway, I recorded it and imported to iMovie and published to my Web Gallery. I was able to put this movie on my blog entry rather than the YouTube video.

It is funny that both you and I had the same reaction, but you beat me to the punch since I was on the road.

Anyway, I enjoy your podcasts and follow you on Twitter. Also, I began using Drobo and Tweetdeck after seeing you discuss them on your podcast. I love Tweetdeck since I can group Tweets by my favorite Twitterers, such as yourself.

Take care and keep up the great work!

P.S. Sorry if this is a double-post. After leaving my comment, I did not see it after it said it was approved, and thought I should try again.
