GBTV #609 | Visiting the Largest HD Display in the World

Shownotes:
Update: I said it’s “60 yards, 120 feet”. My mistake – 60 yards is 180 feet.
We’ve talked about the Cowboys Stadium 60-yard HD display a couple times before on The Brief. It’s the largest HD screen in the world. Today I got to see it in person and we brought the cameras along to share it with you! It’s pretty incredible to look at and I hope it comes through on video.
In addition to the the two 60-yard wide displays, the stadium has over 2800 other IP monitors throughout the facility. They’ve implemented a technology road map that they believe will future proof the stadium for the next 10 years. IPTV is the solution for video and signage, RFID will track children and Cowboy property and 30 modules hidden all around the building house antennas for Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile to serve the phone and mobile broadband needs of a stadium filled with 80,000 plus sports or music fans.
Thanks to Jason Reid for the tickets that got us in for the look!

I’m not a huge sports fan either, but I enjoyed this one very much. I found it very interesting that every screen has its own IP address – I never would have guessed. Also, though it was completely non-tech, I loved the demonstration of the worst seats in the house!

Cali,
I went yesterday too. It’s an amazing facility. I took way too many pictures, but there were lots of neat details. Looks like you were there later in the day. Did you have to get permission to shoot the segment or were the Cowboys staff cool about it. Seems like they were being very supportive to the visitors, but any time some one pulls out a tripod…you never know. Thanks for the great report!

Like many of your viewers, I’m not a giant sports fan either, but I really enjoyed this brief. For a few years now I’ve been saying that RFID tech will really be prominent and it looks like that’s starting now! I can’t wait to see what other innovations like this people can think up!

Seats? Who needs em? I buy general admission, queue for 10 hours, and then get to be against the barrier! :) Enjoy Sir Paul. 10 bucks says he closes with a rousing rendition of “Hey Jude”.

I was there for the Chelsea v. Club America match a couple of weeks ago and screens are awesome! However, I don’t think the AT&T antennae were working cuz I was lucky to have 1 bar of signal on my iPhone and tweets kept timing out…

Sorry, but 60 yards is 180 feet.
3 feet to the yard.
not 120feet, that would be a yard of 2 feet.

Cali, thanks for the review. As a Cowboys fan I certainly appreciated it.

Can you post the seat numbers for those bad seats or the section at least, i would consider it a public service.
August 11th, 2009 at 6:35 am
That would have been good! I’m not sure any of us noticed the seat numbers unfortunately. We were too interested in the view. :)

If they’re replacing the railings with glass I wonder how much windex they would need to keep all the glass clean?

Not a useful report. Would have been nice to actually see some of the actual technology deployed to do this including video switchers, network switches, etc…
August 25th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
Yeah, I would have loved that too! :) Their PR company didn’t respond, and normally you can NOT take cameras in there, so this was really my only chance to show you guys in person.

Football and tech. Tweeting this just because @itsbooyer will probably like it http://tinyurl.com/ntcokh

Thanks for the report Cali. I’ll probably never go to a game, but its nice to see what we are paying for with our tax dollars.

I am a thousand miles away. It would have been helpful to see details of the roof, more info on the glass rail safety, something about the specialty Boxes and so forth.
Good report but not very professional.
