I noticed I was bending to the will of some iPhone critics and restraining myself from talking much about iPhone 3G. Since GeekBrief.TV is primarily about what excites me in the world of technology, I realized why I was so willing to hold back on the show. I’m not exactly excited about the iPhone 3G. I like it. There isn’t really anything I don’t like about it other than it’s tied to AT&T. The thing that excites me most about iPhone is the 2.0 software and the App Store. I’ve been doing mini reviews and tips on my blog at www.iCali.tv all week.
I mentioned the Voodoo Envy a few shows back. LaptopMag.com showed off an awesome feature of the Envy. It’s called IOS, or Instant On Operating System. It’s powered by Splashtop and it gives users instant access to important applications while the full OS boots up in the background.
Code Tech is a WYSIWYG editor browser-based code editor by Zachary Carter that comes in the form of a Firefox plug-in. I’ll definitely be using it.
A couple weeks ago my obsession was camera switching for live streaming video. Mike Versteeg is meeting that need with VidBlaster. Now my obsession is home automation and a number of GBTV viewers pointed me toward Savant Systems. It’s unique in the world of Home automation because it’s built largely on Mac hardware. I’m going to work on getting a Savant guy on Geek Brief Radio to talk about what they’re doing. Alex Lindsay featured the system On MacBreak #158.

Hi Cali. That’s the thing with me about iPhone: it’s tied to a two-year contract with AT&T. As soon as cellular mobile phone service provider options become available, I’ll start considering an iPhone.
Something else I’d like to see with the iPhone is a terminal with an SSH client so an old school g33k can have some command-line fun and log in to their favorite public access Unix system.
My Nokia N800 tablet PC has that plus a user-replacable battery, bluetooth connectivity and a non-proprietary Linux operating system that you can jailbreak without voiding the warranty.

CodEtch, okay,
First a lil correction: your “shoe notes” call it “Code Tech” which is well.. wrong but I’m sure that you knew that.
But what really brought me over here to comment is to tell you about a much better Firefox Extension IDE. Its w/o a doubt the defacto Firrefox Extension for any/all web designers & programmers. Its called Firebug. It’s official homepage is @ http://getfirebug.com/ but its also on Mozilla’s Extensions/Addons site @ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1843
You can also search Firefox addons’ site for ‘firebug’ & find tons of things that extended firebug’s own functionality. Truly this is the best web programming & design tool period; for Firefox, standalone or abs anything else.
Take care & thnx for an unuassuaally good episode,
Kaity G. B.

I’d be happy to help you test Vidblaster. Please check your GBTV email for my Skype information and reply with a time you’d like me to be available to answer your Skype call. I have a built-in iSight camera for video chat. ^..^~

I’m sorry for the repeats, guys!
I was tweaking a developmental version of a web browser for the Gnome desktop when the first comment didn’t seem to appear after a half dozen or so re-draws of the page, so I assume a cookie – or the client – failed and the comment didn’t post.

If you’re looking for something a little more rounded and stable than Codetch, Give Kompozer a try.
It’s the offspring of Nview, which we’ve been using for a long time now. As much as I love Firefox, I’m enough of a pragmatist to know that it doesn’t rule the world . . . yet. Komposer/Nview also offers a site manager that works well for most routine maintenance.

It’s great to see the home automation (HA) products becoming more consolidated and slick (and Mac). Most of what you see Savant doing has been around in various forms for many years, but it used to take a lot more tinkering. I’m happy with my homebrew HA systems, but I believe we really need more of Savant’s type of polish and plug and play for wider acceptance.
