If you look closely at all these videos of the Slate you notice that they are simply running a very basic touch-enabled application launcher in the foreground. So if you tap on any other app in the task bar or the Windows logo button to its left you are back in the land of standard Windows UI where you will need to go frequently to get some very basic things done. This is the failing of all the non-iPad devices: underneath the (very shallow) surface layer is your typical, non-finger-friendly, desktop-class UI that was designed to be driven via a keyboard and mouse. Apple stripped out *all* of the GUI layer from the desktop version of OS X and replaced it with simple screens that are all designed from scratch with the touch interface in mind.
Some people are complaining that the iPad is just a large iPod Touch running iPhone OS instead of the desktop version of OS X. But can you imagine trying to run Outlook, Word, or Excel with there tiny toolbar buttons, menus, or ribbon bars on one of these devices using your fingers only? Or can you imagine having a slate device that you have to worry about running your anti-virus and anti-spyware software on? How about having to go through the regular Windows PC boot process when you turn it on? This is what these people don’t seem to get. Slate devices have been unsuccessfully available for the past decade but we used to call them Tablet PCs. They had a swivel screen that covered a standard laptop keyboard. What makes people think that removing the keyboard and re-branding it as a “slate” is going to make them any more desirable?
If HP or any of the other vendors had any real guts, they would use the opportunity of this nascent market to create their own slate OS to compete against Apple just like in the early days of personal computing when each hardware vendor (Atari, Amiga, Commodore, Apple, et al) had their own OS they were trying to push. At the very least, why don’t they just use Android or Linux and just build up a fully touch-enabled GUI layer of their own and free themselves from the shackles of Microsoft for this next phase in the computer revolution?
I watched the video and the flash sites look good. I couldn’t help but wonder as was pointed out by the previous poster. Can you imagine trying to close those windows? I was looking at the NY Times part at end and saw: a) a very small close button in the upper right. b) a popup that happened mostly off screen.
HP Slate is suppose to have people use their fingers for everything. But windows with their tiny controls does not work well. It makes it a very frustrating environment.
Also, I hated the back of the Slate. It looked like somebody glued a piece of wood or thick piece of plastic.
I also found it amusing when they continuously brag about getting the “whole web” and then go to the MTV site and all you see is a web page cluttered with ads for cruise ship vacations, TurboTax, and Tide detergent. This is exactly the reason why I love Click To Flash. I don’t want the “whole web” if that means I have to sift through a web page to find the real content in a sea of advertisements.
This device is configurable. That means it can support the user configuring the UI(not something Franz the apple slave could grasp). The device is new and will have some growing pains just like all products(ie, if you cannot walk and chew gum at the same time buy a mac).
Compare it to the apple products which virtually ties your hands and feet behind your back so only your nose works.
Kudos for HP to try something different and developing a device that can serve it’s owners and not enslave them to apple god.
All of your comments suggests none of you have used windows 7 as a touch enabled device. That so called “home layer” that HP is providing is nothing but a graphical shortcut button and it’s windows itself that is running the whole experience. If you look real closely at the task bar at the bottom of the slate in the video. That is the default taskbar in windows 7 and those icons on the bottom are program icons that IMO are finger accessible.
I have had the pleasure of running both win 7 and OS X Leopard with a touch screen and believe it or not win 7 is built for touch screens. I can’t even find a proper driver for OS X to run on touch screens and it is funny how Apple can convince people that there is no need to run a full os on a touch device when windows has been doing it for 20 years! Instead they give you ipod large because their own os can’t run a touchscreen properly on their own hardware!

At least HP has the balls to offer what people have been asking for a long time now. It’s those lazys who will make the slate fail because they don’t have enough processing power in their skull to learn an interface, instead, chosing what 1 company dictates how to use an interface and call it an os.

This is the failing of all the non-iPad devices: underneath the (very shallow) surface layer is your typical, non-finger-friendly, desktop-class UI that was designed to be driven via a keyboard and mouse. Apple stripped out *all* of the GUI layer from the desktop version of OS X and replaced it with simple screens that are all designed from scratch with the touch interface in mind.
Some people are complaining that the iPad is just a large iPod Touch running iPhone OS instead of the desktop version of OS X. But can you imagine trying to run Outlook, Word, or Excel with there tiny toolbar buttons, menus, or ribbon bars on one of these devices using your fingers only? Or can you imagine having a slate device that you have to worry about running your anti-virus and anti-spyware software on? How about having to go through the regular Windows PC boot process when you turn it on? This is what these people don’t seem to get. Slate devices have been unsuccessfully available for the past decade but we used to call them Tablet PCs. They had a swivel screen that covered a standard laptop keyboard. What makes people think that removing the keyboard and re-branding it as a “slate” is going to make them any more desirable?
If HP or any of the other vendors had any real guts, they would use the opportunity of this nascent market to create their own slate OS to compete against Apple just like in the early days of personal computing when each hardware vendor (Atari, Amiga, Commodore, Apple, et al) had their own OS they were trying to push. At the very least, why don’t they just use Android or Linux and just build up a fully touch-enabled GUI layer of their own and free themselves from the shackles of Microsoft for this next phase in the computer revolution?

I watched the video and the flash sites look good. I couldn’t help but wonder as was pointed out by the previous poster. Can you imagine trying to close those windows? I was looking at the NY Times part at end and saw: a) a very small close button in the upper right. b) a popup that happened mostly off screen.
HP Slate is suppose to have people use their fingers for everything. But windows with their tiny controls does not work well. It makes it a very frustrating environment.
Also, I hated the back of the Slate. It looked like somebody glued a piece of wood or thick piece of plastic.

I also found it amusing when they continuously brag about getting the “whole web” and then go to the MTV site and all you see is a web page cluttered with ads for cruise ship vacations, TurboTax, and Tide detergent. This is exactly the reason why I love Click To Flash. I don’t want the “whole web” if that means I have to sift through a web page to find the real content in a sea of advertisements.

This device is configurable. That means it can support the user configuring the UI(not something Franz the apple slave could grasp). The device is new and will have some growing pains just like all products(ie, if you cannot walk and chew gum at the same time buy a mac).
Compare it to the apple products which virtually ties your hands and feet behind your back so only your nose works.
Kudos for HP to try something different and developing a device that can serve it’s owners and not enslave them to apple god.

All of your comments suggests none of you have used windows 7 as a touch enabled device. That so called “home layer” that HP is providing is nothing but a graphical shortcut button and it’s windows itself that is running the whole experience. If you look real closely at the task bar at the bottom of the slate in the video. That is the default taskbar in windows 7 and those icons on the bottom are program icons that IMO are finger accessible.
I have had the pleasure of running both win 7 and OS X Leopard with a touch screen and believe it or not win 7 is built for touch screens. I can’t even find a proper driver for OS X to run on touch screens and it is funny how Apple can convince people that there is no need to run a full os on a touch device when windows has been doing it for 20 years! Instead they give you ipod large because their own os can’t run a touchscreen properly on their own hardware!
Flim Flam.
At least HP has the balls to offer what people have been asking for a long time now. It’s those lazys who will make the slate fail because they don’t have enough processing power in their skull to learn an interface, instead, chosing what 1 company dictates how to use an interface and call it an os.

Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface.
