Mailplane

I tweeted today about an application I use and love, Mailplane. It’s an application that allows you manage multiple Gmail accounts very effectively. You can see when new emails come into a different account without logging in and out, and you switch between accounts with a double click of your mouse. It uses the Gmail interface, so all your labels and filters stay in tact.
I got a lot of responses from my tweet asking why I liked it better than other options, like Mail.app and Gmail Manager. I used Gmail Manager (Firefox plugin) before I found Mailplane. I much prefer to have my email in a separate application. The more extensions you add to Firefox, the slower it gets. People pointed out that since Gmail supports IMAP, I could set up my accounts in Mail.app. The problem I have with that is that it downloads all the messages, taking up my valuable memory.
Another popular question was was “is there an equivalent application for Windows?”. Thanks to the Twitter community, it looks like the best options are web based, making it irrelevant what your OS is. GMX looks like a promising option. Other links I got were GAlert and Prism.

Great post Cali! I’ll have to try out the apps. Did this convince Neal to use Mailplane? :)

Prism is one of my favorites, and if you’re willing to give it a whirl, Google Chrome lets you tear off tabs and drop them on your desktop like Prism apps. In fact, I’m using Chrome right now to comment on this. :)
