My Future: Canon EOS D5 Mark II

I like being a frugal person. Being frugal in some choices gives me freedom in other choices. I’ll sacrifice in all kinds of material ways to buy gear to improve the production of GeekBrief.TV. That’s why I just ordered a Canon EOS D5 Mark II. That’s a club I want to join.
Before? I had the Red Scarlet on my shopping list for 2009. Today? I took the Red Scarlet off my list. Also today Red announced a change of plans. On a post at scarletuser.com, Jim said this:
“We have changed everything about Scarlet because the market has changed and we have discovered a lot of things in the process. We have a new vision.
Wipe you minds of the past announced Scarlet. Forget the design and forget the price. It is all different now. We think you will be surprised. Glad we didn’t take any deposits… ”
We may end up with a Scarlet in the long run, but that’s the nice thing about pro equipment. You can sell what you buy without very much of a loss.

After watching the demo video I kind of want one too. My miniDV cam recently died and I’ve been sticking with a 20D for along time now. Being fairly frugal as well, if it happens it won’t be until 2009… but… I’ll have to see if I can hold out.

camera looks awesome yes … but even the best sensors with the best lens won’t ever automagically give someone good cinematic skills.. that clip was shot by a professional with obvious budget backing. that said, it takes nothing away from the device itself.
i also dont quite get when you say in the brief that “the results fell short of your expectations” and then you go on to praise the thing… anyway.. hope you get one and have fun with it !
eh on a slightly related note mrs cali, could we hope to be able to catch geekbrief in 720p, dare i dream 1080p at any point in the foreseable future ?
I just a got a shiny new 40″ sammy that I wanna use to its fullest :P even the current ‘X large’ format looks a tad SD-ish on a screen that size.

Paul: I said “my enthusiasm fell short”, meaning I wasn’t quite excited enough. :)
Do you know about the HD feed? It’s the closest we can get to the 720p we shoot in because of compression and bandwidth restrictions. The HD feed is optimized for Apple TV and viewing on your computer.

@paul
I agree, most don’t even know how to use a tripod.
I just ordered a habbycam for my Canon EOS D5 I can’t wait to start using it. Probably an essential run and gun solution to helping the shakiness of the DSLR cameras.
